Well for those who havent watched it, here's the wikipedia link

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/21_(2008_film)

So, what i don't understand about it is how the counting works, say the count is +15, what is that supposed to mean?

And isn't it based on probability? meaning there's still a chance to lose as well, but they keep winning over and over again.

Low cards favor the dealer, high cards favor the player. If a 2-6 is played it's good for the player, so +1. If 10-A is played it's bad for the player, so -1. 7-8-9 are neutral cards. If the count is +15 that means that there are 15 more low cards out of the deck than high cards, so there's a greater percentage of 10-A in there. That gives the player an edge, so he bets more.

That's irrelevant now as constant shuffling machines negate any advantages of counting. The shoe is never plus or minus.

6 deck shoes are just asking to throw your money away. Play a single deck game. The deck is usually shuffled once every few games (depends on the amount of players at the table), and counting might actually help you there.

That's why you don't play tables that have the machines. 6 deck shoes only please, and there's still plenty of them out there as players will specifically avoid the machines.

Side note - the movie is supposed to take place in MIT, however basically all of the campus footage is shot at Boston University. All of the classroom scenes are filmed in BU, as are the dorm room scenes. The only thing MIT are the outside shots of the library which is canned footage.

That still means jack sh*t. If you understand math at all you don't play a 6 deck shoe either. To count cards takes a team of experts. The dealer is counting too, if anyone at the table ups his bet when the count gets heavily plus it's a sure sign of a card counter and that player will be banned. The only way it works is to have some players counting at a table and signaling in other players when the time is right so that betting patterns don't change.

It's the most hilarious thing in the world when somebody that doesn't even begin to understand odds and mathematics offers up 6 deck blackjack as a game the smart player prefers. The smart player doesn't sit at the table. If you do it's proof that you're an idiot.

The way you folks are talking, you make sounds as if you all only play blackjack if you can count the cards. Is that true?

What difference does 1 deck vs 6 decks make if you are not counting? I would think none, assuming the machines aren't rigged, which would be illegal in Nevada and AC.

If you are counting, your betting pattern would make it obvious, so unless all of you above posters are in a counting crew, do you just stick to poker and call all BJ players idiots? The same could then be said about the players of all games in a casino, even poker since there's a rake.

I don't gamble much at all, so I'd love to know what I'm missing from this that seems to make the majority of you say the same thing.

Cheers.

Edit: Yes I realize just about anybody can count a 1, or perhaps even 2 deck shoe, but good luck finding one.
