I will agree that they are transition states as on the border between the north and south.

Income is lower because there is less business and industry in the south and less wealth.

It's all good. Arguing on the internet is too hard. This is why I could never post in P&N, for me to make valid points I'd have to devote hours to that rather than easy neffing

I addressed that in my posts. The line was not meant to divide north and south (even if many use it that way), and the DC metro area can be considered a northern entity.

Shift in demographics. Retirees. More people = more business.

You're avoiding the question.

There is more wealth in the north. It's a fact. This has been true since colonial times. It was part of the reason for the Civil War because the south was agricultural and the north was industrial. Most all of the great business leaders came from the north. Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Carnegie, Bill Gates, Buffett, etc.

There isn't much old money in the south for this reason compared to the Northeast.

There are few universities, or none really, comparable to the Ivy League.

I'm not South bashing. I'm just being honest. You cannot be a fanboy for one side or the other. You have to be honest with yourself, no matter where you live or where you were born.

There is less money in the south. People are generally less educated. There is less business and industry, particularly in the most profitable industries like finance or computer software. These are all facts. It's not up for debate.

This is absolutely true, though I have to wonder if the recession is going to drive more businesses to the south where the pay is lower. I know one reason that my job is down here is because they can pay us less than they would in larger northern cities.

It has been slowly moving south for years already. It is just speeding up due to the recession.

The reasons are many ...

Lower taxes.
Lower cost of living.
People work for a reasonable wage.
No Unions ( or very few ).
Great seaports railways for exporting and shipping.
No snow or blizzards.
