I have SBS 2003 and am installing it on a Dell PowerEdge 400SC. I'm looking for someone to help me with a couple things and maybe I can help with a couple things. I just need some advice in correctly configuring DHCP and DNS. I had the DHCP working ok at first but had to redo the install because I decided to use a different hard drive. Now, the 2 client computers see the server but have no internet access. I can ping the server and I can access the clients from the server. The server has internet access. I have 2 NICs installed. One for the Internet connection, one for the LAN. Just looking for some help. Any tips? Thanks.

Why not use a router and have that provide DHCP (among other things)?
Sounds like you are exposing this server directly to the 'net which is BAAAAAAD!!!!

I do have a router, I am using it as a switch and also for my wireless connection to the laptop. I would rather use the server as the DHCP and DNS for 2 reasons:

1) More customizable
2) For learning purposes

It won't be exposed to the Net. The package I got comes with ISA Server that I can install with the OS. SBS 2003 has a basic firewall but not as good as ISA Server.

If you can't setup dHCP and DNS, you might as well give up on ISA.

Here is your answer by the way, and I recommend you buy the Videos for $9.99 available in the hot deals thread

If you are using there server for these services

1)Set the Server's IP to a static one

2)enable DHCP server. blah.

3)Set EVERY PC's DNS settings, INCLUDING YOUR SERVERs' NICs', to the server's IP address.

4) Create a foward lookup zone in the SERVER's DNS configuration that point requests that your network cannot fufill to your ISP's DNS servers.

That's it.

Goosemaster,

I'll have to give the forward lookup zone a try.

As for the DNS addresses all pointing to the servers IP, I had read that all the client PCs should point to the server but the server should point to an outside DNS. Is that true? Either way, I'll try both.

This is especially kind of frustrating because I had DNS and DHCP working perfectly on my old server with Server 2000. Of course, that was over a year ago. I know I am just missing something due to being a little rusty. I set that server up right after passing the Server 2000 MCP test. So, I had a lot of stuff fresh in my head.

here are sceenshots of my dhcp config

this is how my server is configured

this is my client configuration

then your server just forwards all dns requests to your isp's dns server. you get those from your router status screen and add them in the forwarders tab in the dns configuration

Mavtech,

the DNS settings for your server should point to yourself. The DNS Service should have forwarders enabled that should point to your ISP DNS servers.

Ok. I think I got both to work ok. I now have DHCP, DNS, and ISA all working. One problem I was having was getting an internet connection on a client computer. It's my main computer. When I got a connection after logging on with a domain username, I realized it had to do with the profile. The controller wasn't giving it internet access. But, it fixed it when I installed the firewall client.

I changed my mind. I uninstalled ISA and disabled DHCP. I went back to using my D-Link router as the DHCP/Firewall. ISA was a pain and the server slowed my internet connection for the 2 client computers. Performance is much easier and faster with the router. I have my Exchange server up now too. Thanks for your help.
