Anyone with Social Anxiety Disorder?

I really hate Social Anxiety Disorder, and I want medicine for it. Can anyone who has it tell me if they take medicine, what they take, etc?

Yes I have it, a little. I don't take medicine I just avoid being social.

I wish I could avoid being social, but t's very hard to get good grades in school without sucking up And when I get a job, I will need to be. I mean like, I don't do things like go to "parties" and go out on weekends, I just use the computer and be social online since it's not like in person or anything. I don't like talking to people and meeting new people in real life though, cause it's all.. ugh.

I have not been diagnosed, I just have symptoms.

anyway, i think i'm kinda like you. i hardly talk to anyone at the job i'm at, and i'm usually uncomfortable at large parties. my problem with talking to new people is thinking of things to talk about. nothing is important enough to me to have a serious discussion about, so basically all i do is joke about everything all the time (and i have a pretty sick sense of humor). so i guess i feel kinda out-of-touch with "normal" people so i generally just keep to myself.

woah, i'm the same way, i figured theres something wrong with me...i have like NO friends...well i have one, i dont talk to him much though. im such a loser...but i never meet any people i WANT to be friends with, they're all liars, stupid, or some combination of those.

No it's not. I have 4.0 average and I don't suck up. I just do my work.

Seriously, ask your doctor about Paxil. It might be what your looking for. I've never taken it. It's just that I'm just being constantly fed Paxil ad's on TV 24/7!!!!


I'm on Serzone, but that's not perscribed specifically for social anxiety disorder.

well thats no good maybe ok at a temp job but not if your in it for a career unless your a super genius it doesn't work out if you don't socialize.

Medicines act differently in each person. With medicines like this, it could even take years to find the right mix.

I took paxil for this a few months ago but had to stop because it's just too expensive. It helped me a little I think but I didn't feel like it was worth the money.

I must be a super genius then

I'm not really antisocial though, I'm just "quiet", as they say. People say they're often afraid of talking to me because I look like I'm always thinking about something...... and they're right!

I hate groups of people, always have. I don't mind them so much as long as they don't surround me. When I have people on every side of me, I begin to get extremely uncomfortable. If I'm in front of the crowd where I can observe all at once, I'm usually ok

For the most part though, friends, coworkers, etc. acknowledge all my quirks in an endearing manner...

I?m on Paxil. It really does work. I am not on it for social anxiety, but stress.... I have noticed an entire change in myself though, a very positive change. I care about things, I can sleep, I don?t get stressed out as bad (this also makes it so I don?t turn into an ass due to much stress) I also love to go out again. My wife thinks it is a miracle drug (so do I). =)

Hehe, thats survival instinct. Even when its completly irrational, I like to keep my back to a wall so I can see everything.

I became increasingly socially phobic.
I just had to make myself change, quit EQ, and get out more.

I was the same way with Ultima Online (which is by the way, a far better game) My theory is that the massive multiplayer aspect of the games fufills superficial socializing desires while the escapist aspect of them helps to ignore the real world. Eventually, real world contact with people seems scary compared to game contact. This encourages more playing. Its a nasty cycle.

It depends on if it's situational anxiety or generalized anxiety. For generalized, you're probably talking about something like Wellbutrin or Paxil. If it's situational, then you're talking Valium, Klonopin.

But only a psychiatrist can decide what's right for you. Unless it's interfering with normal day to day activities, you don't necessarily need medication; sometimes behavioral therapy works well if you're sort of on the fringe of needing/not needing meds.

funny you guys mention the everquest addiction. Thats the first thing I thought of when I read some of these posts. My friend had a roommate that would walk into the room after class, completely ignore everyone in the room, go straight to his computer and start playing everquest. He'd stop to eat, sh!t, piss, sleep, study, and go to class. Everything else was EQ the whole time. I don't think he had any friends either.

I had similar problems in the summer of 2000. I got addicted to Diablo 2 so badly that I ignored both my friends and my gfs. Didn't stop till I beat the game with 3 different characters. Yet another reason I never wanted to try EQ or UO or any of those massive multiplayer online games. But I dunno if I'll be able to resist Star Wars Galaxies.

I do still wish I had all my spells and weapons with me out in public. Especially, SOW, Snare, and invisibility.
