well he can get a free granite countertop. the only problem is that it'll be of the sample size variety and only be fit to use on a 1" square table.

the only way you're going to get a free granite counter top is if you maintain your stance of dominance

Why don't you get the cabinets from your uncle if that's what he does for a living?

My uncle does custom cabinets/furniture for yatchs so the shop he works for isn't setup to make custom kitchen cabinets otherwise he would.

I want a free slab of granite. It's not that expensive. I would do the pickup, fabrication, and installation of it. My uncle can cut the granite at his shop.

I believe their sales people in the kitchen area get a commission, so their margins have to be good enough for that, it also means the sales people should be a little motivated to "find" a returned slab of granite or "open box" for the handles.

Do all of you pay retail at furniture stores too? All these places have room to move on quoted items like this, I'm just trying to find out what Lowes is.

On top of all that, that first guy I talked to was talking about throwing in a granite slab and whatever he could to "make a deal". This Lowes is located in a not so hot part of town now and it's been pretty empty the last few months.

I am still curious as to why the OPs uncle who is a cabinet maker by trade is not the OPs first choice

I would at least think the uncle would have a better idea as to what Lowes profit margin would be

Hey good one!! You're only the 6th one to make a reference to my name since I've been here.

What I'm saying is I'm not set on buying at that place and don't care, I will just walk out. Prefabbed cabinets are a dime a dozen. It's not like there is a shortage on resellers, someone wants to make a deal.

You'll have to pay for it since the slab of granite you want is customized, not available in store stock. All you'll see will be samples of the counter top, how it feels and looks like. That means it falls under the SOS (special order sales) category. They come out to your place, measure and have it manufactured, delivered and installed, all for a fee. As mentioned earleir if you're military/veteran you'll automatically get 10% off.

They won't be making any money if you pay in cash. Preference would be using a Lowe's Credit Card. I beleive its currently 12 months no interest.

I'm not military, but I do have a 10% off coupon from Lowesmoving.com.

A year ago I would have done a CC, but I don't use credit cards anymore.

You'll end up at some local place with a wily guy behind the counter who has enough sense to stock a relatively unknown brand at vastly inflated prices. He'll then proceed to convince you that this is a top quality product and begrudgingly allow you to talk him down to a considerably lower-than-sticker price. You'll leave delighted with your bargain, despite having paid more for an inferior product, and he'll make his margin and then some. It's all perception really, because you're probably getting the better deal at Lowes with no "dealing" necessary. Still, the satisfaction you get when you think you're getting something for less is more important than actually getting it, because chances are whatever you end up with will serve your purposes just fine. Happy hunting!

Your entire post is based on the assumption that all local guys are idiots. Have you ever tried to ask someone at these big box stores a question? You're lucky if they know where anything is located.

Why would anyone care about brand with cabinets? All top, name brand cabinet companies have their good stuff and their piss poor stuff. It has absolutely nothing to do with the brand, it has everything to do with how they are put together and the materials used. Who gives a fuck if it's a name brand?

If you want to nickel and dime you may want to invest some time buying Lowes gift cards on ebay. Should be like 20% off.

Actually his entire post was based on the assumption that the local cabinet guy is smarter than you.

You've taken a bit of a beating in this thread... you may be able to get Lowe's to give you a discount, but don't expect a free slab of granite. That'd probably be 30% or more of the cost of the cabinets, which is a pretty substantial discount. And I highly doubt Lowe's is going to give you an uncut, unpolished slab of granite even if you offer to pay for it - that's not he business they're in.

If your uncle can do the fabrication, he can apparently get slabs of granite. Get a discount on the cabinets if you can, and use the money you saved to buy your own slab of granite.

I've noticed that.

But the slab of granite doesn't matter to me anymore anyway. I'm just going to do laminate tops. This house will be a rental in about 3 years anyway. All I'm looking for is info on where they have the most profit.

I got the sarcasm, the assumption made when being sarcastic was incorrect.

Because custom cabinets cost a fortune. It costs me more to build my own cabinets than to go buy premade ones. Like triple, including the free labor.

Honestly, if you want cheap granite, look for a dealer that sells this:
http://muranocollection.com/

We paid $14 a sq/ft for ours, which is about $30 a linear foot. A slab was around $240 for a 7' sheet. If you can cut & polish on your own you don't have to pay any extra.

Out of curiosity, I called a friend at the local Lowe's and asked about the "free granite counter top".....he laughed. He said they do have a promotion going on now for a free sink basin and if you purchase 25 sq ft. of counter top they'll throw in a free sink.

<---- use to work at Lowe's.

I got my sink for free from Lowes as well. Nice promotion, but their choice of free sinks is very limited. And the sink we got is just a standard sink with standard materials - nothing special. Should've spent a little more to get a nice D-Bowl. The sink looks a little too small for our setup

I know a guy who owned a business, and he put a lot of business expenses on his business credit card. When he sold the business he closed the account and cashed in the reward points for $13,500 worth of Home Depot gift cards. :Q
