When i work, i do 12 hour days. Sometimes theres crazy amount of work, steady work, or nothing to be done b/c of what operation is being done.

I don't mind it though, b/c it affords me lots of free time, between 3-14 days at it time. I usually only work 3 weeks a month. but in a few months, i shoudl be switched over to a 14 day work month.

Starting this Saturday, I'm working a 12 hour shift for 9 days in a row

Edit: Followed by 5 more days of 8 hours.

We do the 9/80, too. I love it. Seems like it's a good compromise between a regular week and a 4/10.

Used to work 40 hours in 2 1/2 days, every week when I was commuting (for 2+ years). It sucked.
Before that, worked 12 hour days for 14 days on, 14 days off. That was strange.
10 hours every 4days is very good, the but hours you work make a difference (ie, 9-7 sucks).
But the time off is wonderful!

While my schedule changes ALOT it usually sticks to the 4 10 hour days which I love. As others have said, you completely avoid rush hour which is amazing! I usually take Wednesdays off. What better day than Tuesday to go to the bar. Zero crowds! And there is just something sexy about 2 days off 2 days on 1 day off 2 days on 2 days off. No matter how bad your work day is you are, at most, 1 day away from time off.

I do 9 hours a day and get every other friday off. I absolutely love it and I am sure the 10/4 is even better.

Do you get overtime for the hours after 8? If not, that sux...One of the many benefits of living in Kahleeforneeya is the Overtime after 8 law. (with some exceptions and allowances for 4x10 hour work weeks.)

I like working 4-10's myself. I enjoy having a 3 day weekend every week. Unfortunately, in the line of work I had for over 30 years, they usually soon morph into 5-10's, or 6-10's, 6-12's, and even 7-10's or 7-12's. While the money is great, pretty soon, you're living to work, instead of working to live...

No, I don't get OT after 8 hours. My short week I get paid for 34.5 hours and my long week is 40 hours plus 6 hours OT (11.5 paid hours per day, but I get 2 one hour breaks per day). Any day extra is OT and after 48 hours it's DT. So I get OT and still have 3 day weekends.

Edit: I work 5AM to 5PM, well, actually 4:45AM to 5:30-6:00PM (OT woot!)

I did it for years ... was off Saturday, 7am-3pm Sun & then 2pm-midnight Weds through Fri.

I liked the hours a lot but the job (Limo dispatcher) was very stressful.

Four 12 hour days, three off in Vegas.

When I was working in SF it was three 12 hour shifts, and one eight hour shift every other week.

Some fire depts are now going to 48 on and 48 off.

I'm sure it just depends on how the 10 hours fall and what your commute time is. If you have a commute of say 30 minutes, that's an hour you just freed up for your week by working one less day.

Of course, the other side is that the really bad days last 2 hours longer. Just try to gear your days to start at 6am so you'll at least be out by 4 or 5pm.

Unless you're self-employed or hourly, you're just stupid.

You've obviously never had a career before. A salary position is a salary position for a reason. When you finally reach a real career driven position, i'm not talking about some helpdesk job or the equivalent, you'll understand.

I put in around 50-60 hours Monday-Friday. It's not a big deal, you still get plenty of time to do what you want.

I used to work those hours doing land surveying.

Once you get used to the long days it rules.

I'm on a 9/80 schedule. Today (Friday) is my day off! Next Friday I only work 8 hours. I do really like that three day weekend every other week. Having it every week would be really awesome. A couple of sites within my company work 4/10s.

Truth is that at most jobs like the one I have (engineering technical work at an operating facility), most people find themselves staying at work 9 or 10 hours a day anyway to get everything they need done. So, the 9/80 or 4/10 works out well for people like us. The down side is that if you get in at 7, you don't leave until 5:30 or 6 on the 4/10 schedule (with the lunch break). Now, to get in at 7 with the commute I have, I would need to leave my residence no later than 6:15. This puts me waking up at 5:30, which puts me in bed no later than 10pm. By the time I get home at around 6:30 at night, I would have around 3 hours to eat and take care of real life before doing it all again.

I spend my 9/80 day doing all the things that you could normally knock out during the week after work. The nice thing is that I typically knock out everything on that day (errands, shopping, laundry, cleaning, etc), which frees up my weekends for everything else.

Just remember that you are only shifting time around. The time you generate in this schedule comes from saving time on your commute, which for me amounts to 3 hours per month on the 9/80 schedule.

The FD here works four 10hr (days), four off, four 14hr (nights), four off/etc. 48 on/off would be pretty sweet if you get paid to sleep..

I used to work 4 10s, but it was a rotating 4 days on/4 days off schedule...that was definitely sweet
