anyone worried about losing your job in this faltering economy?

my company just laid off 3% at my office and I'm worried.
The company is doing good and made profits but it is trimming down
If I get laid off, I think I could get another job but I want to stick it out here for the next two years

I'm personally worried about what's going to happen when I get out of college in about 2 1/2 years. I'm majoring in Graphic Design and I know it's already competitive, but with the crappy economy it looks like it's going to be even harder to snag a job.

yea. definitely worried. also with unemployment rate as high as it is, there's a lot more competition for existing positions

Definitely. My position is easily within the top 3 positions that could be eliminated in time of need. I would probably be able to stay on part time until I found something though.

everytime I check CNN.com, it's about some company laying off thousands of people


Circuit city filing for bankruptcy, DHL cutting 9,500 US jobs, Nortel axing 1,300, etc.

Well, 1.2 million jobs lost sp far this year, and the economic crisis is just starting to hit. 2009 looks to be a pretty bad year. I would say just about anybody could be in jeopardy.

I have noticed I have to work a lot harder to pick up gigs though. It may be time to look into a steady job.

My job has told me that we are good for the next year. It just so happens I am not really happy where I am, but i cannot complain b/c I still have a job.

Software Engineering FTW, I'm not saying that it's impossible to be laid off, but given that you can go to pretty much any company's job postings and find a job posting for Software Engineer/programmer, I'm not to worried about the job market. Computers/Programming needs won't disappear from a downturn in the economy. (Maybe application sales, but there is a lot more than just application sales in the market)

Very worried yes, which is why I've already made some drastic lifestyle changes and quite possibly a complete career change coming soon.

Software engineering is pretty stable. If you get laid off, there about a dozen places that still need them that have nothing to do with selling software.

Probably not. Many of our team members left earlier in the year so we are basically running with a skeleton crew here. There is a hiring freeze going on.

I really liked my job... Had only been there since March but was really enjoying it. Was in the middle of three jobs, one of which goes out Friday. Didn't even get to see them finished
