So the "damn coloreds" are responsible for everything?

No the minorities are resposiable they kept cring for more help . They got it in the form of loans which they very quickly defaulted on .

I don't know which was more offensive. Your English or the fact you think only the minorities were responsible for the mortgage and credit issues.

Never say never but my job is government related so I am fairly safe <crossing fingers>.

I used to work in the automotive industry and I am glad that I got out while the boat still afloat <grad degree paid for ...and they don't do that anymore>.

The local government here is cutting a lot of their employees due to reduced income from taxes (large Ohio souteastern 'blue' county). I guess with house prices falling, the property taxes are reflective and thus hurting county governments.

Nope I work for the state of Texas.

My paycheck comes from student fees. With enrollment expected to increase next year, the student fees that go to the department I work for will also increase.

No. I'm an intern right now but there is plenty of work. Plus, I was hired 3 weeks ago so the company isn't affected by what is happening...or so I think.

A degree in structural engineering helps. =) Always have a need for infrastructure!

Yes, this in addition to the recent package delivery service going south is going to hurt the region alot. Thankfully the healthcare in the region is still going strong!

One good thing about the South is that the housing market is stable so we don't get hurt as bad as CA,FL,AZ.

We have hiring freeze and the big cheese are talking about laid off non essential personnel but they may just use normal retirement/attrition or move people to different departments.

I get a cut of the "ATM service fee" so I am content but the stories I could tell even about the ones we choose to retain.

I am lucky to not be concerned, at all. Luckily my company had the good sense to foresight to see the instability of the economy and continue growth by mostly hiring contractors when the contracts or new contracts required it. So basically they wanted to make sure they protected the full employees if they had to let go of people. So far the company has been well managed and is still in growth mode without having to cut any contractors.

I work for a consulting firm, definitely a bit worried, but surviving. I'm billable and in a countercyclical industry, so hopefully okay.

But I do graduate law school in May (I go at night, work FT), and without at least some economic hope in sight, it's going to be hard to find a job at a firm if that's what I decide to do, or need to if consulting gets bad.

I'm very worried. They laid off around 30% of my department last week and even more in other departments. I didn't get axed, but they did change me to an on-call position.
