Anything I can keep?

Hey all, I've been out of the loop for awhile now and looking to upgrade, however I just don't know what I'd need. I don't know exactly which games I'd be playing - the only certainty would be Street Fighter V.

My current setup was built back in 2009:

ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 LGA 1366
Core i7-920 Bloomfield Quad-Core 2.66GHz
Corsair Dominator 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3 1600
Intel X25-M Mainstream 80GB SATA II SSD
640GB 7200 Western Digital Black
Radeon HD5970

Is there anything I can salvage? I'm assuming not, but figured I would ask. If not then I'll just look at the stickied build thread and go from there. Thanks!

Your system is still good, except I'd overclock it, bump it up to 12GB of ram, maybe get a bigger SSD and a new video card. If you do that, it'll be plenty fast for gaming or whatever, and you can hold off on a new build till next year.

Would be interested to know what power supply you're running. Bought in 2009... 7 years is a long time even for a quality unit. Worth an update?

A 2.66ghz i7 will likely be starting to show its age, you might consider looking into a higher clocked/core count Xeon.

That said, some more SSD space and a new GPU will probably provide the most noticeable gains.

Ditch the old PS unless it's spent its life running behind a good quality AVR type UPS.
An old PS dying, taking brand new components with it isn't a good way to start the day.

Take a look at getting a Xeon X5650 for that board if it's supported, and OC the crap out of it. Get 3x more of those ram sticks, can probably be had for less than 80 bucks for those two and will go a long way. If you don't mind staying lean on the storage department, just keep the drives as-is. After that, get a video card... something like a 750ti or a 960, or whatever the AMD flavors are for those equivalents.

You can carry the card over to a new build if you go for that in the next year or two, then look at bumping the card up later. Smear out those upgrades to get the most bang for your buck, this in total will probably cost you about 250-300 (more if you need new drives), and will be good for most new games at middle-ish settings, anything older than 2 years ago probably maxed at 1080p.

As a note, I just did this with the GF's machine, to give it some longer legs. Was almost identical, an ASUS board, i7 950, 6g of ram, and a gtx275... took her to a xeon 5650, 12g of ram, 960gtx, and she's back to running WoW at 1080p on high/ultra
