Buy a Ferrari, keep it at 0 miles and drive a Prius?

*shrug*

don't like this comparison.

There are legit reason to drive a prius over a ferrari in this country with the quality of our roads and gas prices.

Not to mention jealous people that will key your ferrari.

The Ferrari will cost you over 100k how can you compare that to a $100-$500 SSD?

I know the point everyone is making that you don't need to worry about writes to any current Gen SSD because it will most likely be replaced before you use it up, but remember where we are we have users that will put in 20x the effort for an extra 100mhz on their overclock. etc etc or run their cpu's at 1.5v just to make it to 5 ghz.

So I see nothing wrong with someone monitor the writes of there SSD if it makes them feel better about its usage.

There are legit reasons to use an HDD over an SSD (electricity prices in this country)
Jealous people might steal your SSD too.
the price ratio of ferrari to normal car is similar to top of line SSD to HDD.

His analogy is good in principle (ferrari to prious), the only refinements are:
1. Rather then a Prius it should have some special functional ... say, a pickup or a van.
2. Rather then ALWAYS driving the other car, you are carefully selecting which trips are "worth the milage" on the ferrari and which you would have liked to do on the ferrari but decide not to in order to save its lifespan (mileage)

Eh, I can't exactly afford it either but I prioritized my limited money. It was 350$... it was worth every penny.
I will eat more ramen.
Speaking of, you can make ramen 10x tastier and less nausia causing by throwing away the flavoring pack it comes with and instead using Osem Chicken Soup Mix (if your local stores don't carry it then order it from amazon)

good god. are you sure this Osem is better? i checked the ingredients.

"Salt, Corn Starch, Sugar, Maltodextrin, Flavour Enhancers (Monosodium Glutamate, Disodium Inosinate, Disodium Guanylate), Palm Oil, Dehydrated Onions, Spices, Flavourings, Citric Acid. "

The first 8 listed are salt and sugar or various incarnations of those. nasty

That's the old ingredient list. New one is here:

Also, I said it was better not that it was good for you . The biggest improvement is in the flavor.

With the corrections you've added that is something i can agree on

Cost is comparable, a 500GB HDD will cost you $80 a 500GB SSD drive will cost you ~$550. Prius 30k, a nice V8 ~$180k. And the point is you invested money in a performance car and never really drove it. Much like when people talk about E-peen. It's sitting in the garage never stretching its legs, so it can be a conversation piece about how you can afford a Ferrari, all the while actually driving a car that is uncomfortable at normal highway speeds. As for Gas prices, its not like what you saved in Gas would cover the Ferrari, and the cost of the Pruis, would more then likely cover a large portion if not all of the dailly driving costs of the Ferrari.

Point is that between the provisioning and the load leveling a SSD has become at least in terms of the NAND itself as good as a spindel drive in terms of longevity and that even the most abusive write characteristics has been shown to have almost no impact on a drives death. This isn't 2008. At this point as long as there is room for it, there is no reason to take something off the drive purely based on write habits, specially if its something you would see a benefit from having it on it.

Back to the car comparison. There is nothing wrong with looking at the mileage to see how you are using it. But unless it's a lease (2008- early 2010 SSD's), there is no reason to avoid taking your car to the store 5 miles away, just to save that mileage.

Malware, illegal content...LOL

I myself have a 240GB agility 2, and its plenty of room for most of the more demanding games, but not all my steam games. I keep steam on my WD caviar black, as well as some other games, which seems to work well enough.

Also, dont bench it too much, as the benchmark programs can slow down SSD's if used too much. Especially sandforce.
