If you're looking for cheap eats, there is absolutely nothing that beats dry beans and dry rice. You can buy huge ass bags of it at Costco that amounts to a shitload of meals worth. Grab some cheap chicken every week at the grocery store and you can get meals for years.

Oh, I agree rice and beans are cheap, super cheap. And they are not bad, but are they any where near as good as a fully loaded baked potato? Not in my book. But love me some spanish rice with charro beans! Taco C's is the best.

There are about a million different types of rice and bean dishes from many cuisines. Many of them (Indian alone probably has thousands of variants) are indeed tastier than baked potatoes, in my humble opinion, and many include some delicious potatoes in the recipes, too.

Not a knock against baked potatoes, just not sure why you or your good buddy are obsessed with them. I personally would take home fries over baked, but then again I'm a vegan and don't do a "fully loaded" baked potato (but still preferred home fries even before becoming vegan, so...).

EDIT: I prefer hash browns and french fries to baked potatoes, as well

I good baked potato is hard to beat. Olive oil on the outside, sprinkle salt on it, 425 for 45 minutes....delicious.

yeah, it's very effective, but it sure is easy to get tired of chicken, beans and rice if that is hitting 50% or more of your diet. Still, I do it, because it's so fricking cheap. Just need to vary the type of beans and prep, the rice, and duh: the cut and prep of chicken. ...of course, you really want some veggies and greens from time to time...

What about vindaloo with chicken (or lamb!) and potatoes. man, indian potatoes swimming in some pakistani/indian/nepalese curry dish. yumyumyum.

sure, I'll eat a baked potato, but it really has to be the worst way to prepare the wonderful potato. So many better options. Hell, I greatly prefer a simple boil, with full skin, butter and salt over a baked potato.

My electricity and gas bill cost more than 1 potato because it takes 20mins to boil then 30-40 mins to bake. All that gas and electricity for 1 spud. ;_;

It's an underrated food for sure, but only if you have good toppings. Baked potatoes without premium toppings is just a potato.

...the sealed made for microwave potatoes...

They are potatoes. They arent "made" any differently from any other potato!

I've never had a microwaved potato come out with that lovely browned crispy skin that a good baked potato has.

Potatoes are just about the cheapest food that can be pretty tasty (much better than noodles or rice imho), but lets be honest. Potatoes are really just the side show for a big piece of meat. I say if you want quality for your dollar going cheap is not the way to go.

I submit that a New York strip of bison meat cooked medium rare with just a slight splash of soy sauce and a tiny sprinkle of garlic it the best bang for your buck in the culinary world. Sure it is going to be approximately twenty times as expensive as a loaded backed potato, but it will be roughly 1000 times more satisfying. The potato is a side show that one eats to fool oneself into thinking that they ate a vegetable, because of the guilt over eating a good steak. Steak is just that good.

Just about anything is better than baked potato.

Exactly.

Baked potato alone has a weeks worth of carbs in it. Then pile on the butter, sour cream, bacon bits, broccoli, cheese, etc, and its basically a cheap heart attack.

Stay far away from baked potatoes. I work out with this lady at work who eats them when the baked potato bar is in rotation. She eats one a day and then complains about not losing weight and feeling lethargic. No shit, you just put a ton of crap in your body and are wondering why you feel the way you do?

GAH!!!

A "week's worth of carbs"? Sounds kinda like bullshit.
Mind you I'm not a carb nut or anything, but a quick Google puts a baked potato at 37g of carbs, and 225-325 carbs per day as a reasonable figure on a 2,000 calorie diet.

I rarely eat baked potatoes anymore. Loaded with carbs and once you start adding butter, sour cream and cheese it is just carbs and cholesterol.

OP, good luck with your heart attacks.

I rarely eat it because it takes forever to cook and my electricity is not happy. Who the hell just eat a jacket potato on its own with no condiments. Rip heart.

I was being facetious of course, but the sheer amount of carbs don't do you any favors. Way too much starch for what it is unless you don't care about that and aren't trying to maintain a healthy weight.

Pssshhhh, while baked potatoes are good (well, they are if they're slathered in butter, sour cream, salt, and pepper) kiwi fruit is better pound-for-pound by far. In fact I'm not sure any food comes close to its goodness:weight ratio but if one did it's probably Talenti Vanilla Bean gelato.
