Maybe he could have said African/Afro American but it seems to change all the time about what is appropriate any given day but I don't see anything wrong with it honestly.

I remember when I was talking to some friends about a trip to france, and I mentioned I only saw one black couple there. Someone came up to me and gave me the general PC speach about that being racist.

Me : "So, what am I supposed to call them?"

Her : "African American"

Me : "Umm, I was in FRANCE"

Ever since I moved here I have been very careful what I say, for some strange reason. I guess I don't yet know what is PC to say.

Black does not describe ethnicity. Black is a colour. Your question might have been better forumulated ( ) as "Using black to individualize (identify) a person".

I don't see nothing wrong, but here in Romania weeks when I see at least one black person are the exception, not the norm

Calin

EDIT: Calling someone "african-american" forces us to call everyone else a "south-american american", "central-american american", "european-american" and so on... Not a good thing, I'd say...

Even though cracker originally simply meant poor white person, for me it connotates slaver-owner or at least someone who supports slaver and would have a slave if they weren't so poor. In that respect I would say that cracker could be taken to be very close to if not as bad as the N word, which is equivilent to calling someone a slave. Both words have historical connotations, one calls someone an object, the other calls someone a person who has a human being for a object. I don't think I could rate which is worse, but I believe both are of about the same magnitude of insult if used in a derogatory mannor.

My Goodness. What is sad is that no matter how long humans roam the earth no one will ever get over the color barrier. Especially now since parents teach their young these bad behaviors. This goes for Whites and Blacks. Blacks tell there kids to dislike whites and whites do the same.

Yeah there are alot of points made like how the N word carries a heavier conotation. Well all racial slurs do. I mean what about Ch$nk? Its funny how whites and Black make it okay to degrade other races and keep their as the two prime races.

I THINK WE ARE ALL Poisoned. You can't shake it now.

Some folks need to get out more often. I guarantee I hang around more blacks, both young and old in a day than you probably talk to in a year. The word cracker is not even used hardly. I may have heard some black person maybe use it a couple of times but its not even a taboo word. White people who accussed blacks of racially slandering with by callling them cracker is a bunch of crap. Most blacks will use some profane word with the emphasis on being white. Like you white MF or you white A-hole. Something like that. But cracker is like hardly ever used.

it seems to depend on the generation and area with what is appropriate. My grandfather isn't racist, but when/where he grew up n!gger was simply used the same as white or hispanic. he said colored or negro was the derogetory words of his day. (he grew up in the poorer Baytown/Houston areas and moved around a lot) where today in north texas n!gger seems to mean the same as white trash when talking about a black person. I guess I'm just ignorant of the whole racist issues, since racism never really affected me, in my home town white people are the minority and the subject of racism really never was a problem with my generation there, I've got 3 cousins married to black guys, and 2 cousins married to mexican guys, and my sister is married to a guy from el salvador, thier all family to me.

point of fact n!gger seems to be a censored word, it took me a while to figure out what was being censored in order to post this.

If someone were to refer to me as white I take no offense at all. The reason I brought up the topic is because later on in the day, as the student passed the teacher who called him black, he confronted him and said he was going to tell the principal because he is racist. That really got me and I jumped all over him for his rudeness and disrespect.

Did you ever think that he was upset with the teacher, not necessarily because he called him black, but because out of a group of students, where more than one had their shirts untucked, he got singled out for being the black kid?

OK, and what planet are you from? WE (white people) were the ones that started this whole slavery thing, especially with the use of the N word. Cracker is just another name for us white people, just like whitebread...

you really need to spruce up on your history dude....

What's the big deal. It is just a word. I am no way offended by cracker or whitebread or whatever else. Just because whoever called me that, is not a contributing member or humanity.

Charlize Theron is an african-american:

I believe that if you are white and from South Africa, you cannot legally be called African-American. I have to look it up, but I think that someone sued for that right in the census and LOST. Wasn't that long ago either.

LOL. This reminded of something I saw in EuroTrip. The main guy has this email notification sound that says "Mail Motherfncker!" in a black voice. I laughed, felt offended, then laughed somemore when I heard it again.

Anyways, I'm surprised so many people seem to be authorities on what should offend everyone. If you call someone a name or something and they don't like then thats that. It shouldn't matter if you dont think its offensive. Not many people would walk up to an overweight person with glasses and call them a fat four eyed fnck. These are just basic courtesies that should be applied to those around you. Sheesh.

As long as I'm white, black people are black. If the proper racial term for me becomes "European American" then black people can be "African Americans", simple as that.

i'm asian and i get called all sorts of names like ch1nk, g00k, charlie, yellow-n1gg3r but it doesnt bother me. people even went as far as calling me vietnamese-american and i just tell them "fool, i am born in america, i am an american." it is in my opinion that there a lot of black people who just use racism as a scapegoat when things dont go their way.

i rarely see an asian person b1tch and whine that they did not get something just because they are asian

edit: took me awhile to find out the censored words.
