Anyway to kill the preview in Save for Web in Photoshop CS3?

When I find myself working with large files in photoshop, and then I want to save them for the web, I always have several minutes wasted while the damn thing renders the full size preview before I can resize it smaller.

Does anyone know how to kill this full size rendering until I resize it?

I've resized it ahead of time before heading to save for web previously, and the picture doesn't turn out as sharp and the file size is also larger.

So in short, anyway that I can kill the save for web preview by default when I head in there? It wastes so much damned time.

My rig is an Athlon 5000+ with 4 gigs of RAM, so that's not the problem. And stupid photoshop, even though I tell it to use up to 2 gigs of RAM, it always seems to want to hit my hard drive first anyways.

Photoshop's 'Save for Web's' always terribly slow for me. It'll sometimes take several minutes the first time it's used and is still usually slow afterward. I'm in OSX in an 8-core Xeon mac pro. I hear the same story from everyone in the office.

I actually have switched tools now, and use Fireworks whenever possible to save for web; it seems to make better small files anyway.

Can I ask what feature about 'Save for Web' is preferable over just saving the file via a specific format and color space?

Optimized file sizes.
Given the same quality, save for web gives almost half the file sizes.

I believe that's the advantage. Taking larger files and turning them much smaller.

I have to edit screenshots for work and save for web is pretty darn quick on a 1mb BMP but a 14mb image from my camera takes forever. My computer isn't that bad I don't think. For me it's not the preview that takes a lot of time, it just takes a long time to save.

Thanks for the info about fireworks, I'll try to look into that. Or maybe pay up for lightroom if it has better(faster) tools for conversion/export.

dunno if this helps any, but an 1600x1200ish, 86meg, 17 layer file that i made into an animated gif ran pretty well in 64-bit photoshop. this is on a dual core 2.5ghz lappy with 8gb of ram running 2008 server 64-bit.

the save to web function did crash on me once, but i've done it about 6 or 7 times after trying to get the gif size down and have taken about 10 seconds each time on first preview render.

I do notice quite a performance difference running 32bit and 64bit photoshop on this machine.

Which only means that when you save a JPEG the manual way you need to increase the degree of compression. As far as I understand it 'Save for Web is just a canned batch using a preset JPEG compression level, sets dpi for 72, and some other things. All of which can be performed manually.

Otherwise, it sounds like you're trying to tell me that 'Save for Web' uses some special compression algorithm that isn't available the manual way, which is absurd. I hope that's not what I'm reading.

GIF's I can understand because the 256 color limit has to be optimized.

What version of photoshop are you running? I have CS3 on 64bit windows XP. How can I get it to run in 64bit mode?

cs4, it has a 64bit version in it. shows up as a shortcut in the start menu "Adobe Photoshop CS4 (64 bit)".
