yeah i'm a n00b.

anyway, i have just finished setting up a second domain controller for my domain, and now i want the user shares to be redundant as well as they seem to be all sitting on the first controller. is that possible? and if not, how would i migrate the user shares to the newer domain controller?

thanks in advance ^^

mmm dfs isn't exactly what i meant... DFS from what i know doesn't handle replication of data across 2 shares; granted dfs takes care of the lookup problem i need to take care of; but iirc its pretty slow too. if i were to write my own script to handle the file synchronization i suppose it might work, but i don't know how to force the permissions and ownership rights to duplicate.

i found a commercial solution to this a couple weeks back, but it cost something like a grand for a single liscence thus making it too expensive for me to implement. i was hoping someone knew of something relatively inexpensive to implement..

AFS may be able to do something of what you want. Not simple, though, and not exactly identical to typical NT shares either. But if you've gotta keep it cheap...

edit: fixed link

a robocopy script with the /mirror option will do what you want to do. Be careful the first time you run it. Run a backup and/or have a dup copy already available. If you do it wrong everything goes bye-byes. Robocopy will manage permissions and everything if configured properly.

What's your overall goal in the redundancy?

I dont understand why DFS wont work.... works great for many everytime I've implemented it

Sure it does. Read up some more.

Like they said. DFS is EXACTLY what you want. Microsoft purposely built it for what you are trying to do.

hmm i'll look into it some more. even though i did read a document somewhere one ms's site saying explicitly that it doesn't handle replication of files; i could have read something wrong though.

currently i have 2 dc's on my win2k domain. if one should go down, i want a configuration that will basically ensure that users will still have acess to all of their files as well as their logins. AD takes care of the logins, and i'll read more on DFS

It is call DFS replications. DFS can replicate shared folder so that it has mirror on another server.
When the server is down, the other takes over.
