Anyway to unlock a locked account on Win2K?

I accidently got locked out of a server not on the domain. The account got locked after I tried unsuccessfully logging in about 4-5 times. The problem here is that there was only 1 account created on this server. Is there anyway we can reset the password or unblock it?

Do you mean that you named and created an account? In this case, there should be a default administrator account as well that you could try to use.

You can't delete the default Local Administrator account, so it has to be there somewhere, even if it was renamed. And Administrator accounts aren't subject to LockOut. Even if there IS a lockout, the default settings usually unlock the account after a waiting period.

If everything else fails, there are Linux-based password reset boot CDs that should work fine for Server 2000. These will even "unlock" the old account, if it's been locked out.

Server 2003 or a (Server 2000 or 2003) Domain Controller is a different story...I just spent several hours trying to break into an SBS 2003 SP1 Server...with zero luck.

Wow, I have been trying the same thing here for a client. They were doing prep work for a new installation, had only one account, and after doing the installations and setup on the new server, rebooted and got locked out because the password they have on file isn't the right one. It is the same situation, 2003 sbs. and also same results here. nada. RebateMonger, if you find a solution, let me know!

Sunbelt's product looks promising.
None of the free utilities seem to work with Windows Server 2003 SP1.

I never got around to trying FastCrack, which is free if you can wait for 3 days for $25 or so for 15 minute service.

well i got back in today...the account was locked out because the other DB admin forgot the pw and locked us out. and the admin account was basically renamed so there was only 1 account. I looked at the lockout policy and it was set to 72hrs. made a back up account just in case this happens again.
