Its definately possible. Though many people will say its not

I did this on my old computer with an FX5200 and Intel Onboard.

Make sure you have the drivers installed for both, and make sure BIOS are set for the card to be the primary. Simply plug in the monitor to then onboard, get it all configured.. and it works just fine. (It did for me atleast)

You mean having 2 discrete video cards plugged in with only 1 monitor connected to each? That should work since people are able to plug in 4 monitors to 2 cards.
If your question is can you use onboard + discrete, that is also possible as coxmaster said.
