Better drill holes in those CDs. Who knows what kind of polishing machines AOL has....

You ever seen one that has been microwaved? Very cool stuff! We had a super old microwave we just replaced, took the old one and nuked a few AOHell CDs in. Can't remember how long we nuked 'em, but they came out all spidered like safety glass.

I was an avid user of AOL for 5 years. For the last year I was getting it for free since I threatened to cancel every 3 months. They never caught on for some reason.

I got tired of their shenanigans and I have been AOL free for 2 months now. I need to go AA (AOLers Anonymous).

Have you ever heard of Time Warner Cable (one of the largest in the tv/internet cable industry)? Time Warner Cable = AOL, so the do offer broadband. From what I hear, they (don't know if it's optional or not) integrate the AOL "thing" into the cable connection.

This is an excellent post and I am thankful for the information. I had planned on getting a cable modem awhile back and I was going to offset the cost by sharing the connection with my landlord and his daughter in the front house. They are AOL users and I wouldn't even attempt to make them use something else. The girl could live with the change ,but my landlord is the case of beer and five packs of cigarrettes a day kind of guy. He can barely function on friggin AOL! I used to help them with all kinds of tech support (Free beer and great barbecue were payment I guess, drinkers like company), but I would not want to have to train ex-AOL people to function in the real world. AOL's BYO price increase had killed my internet sharing plans ,but now I think I will look back into it. AOL has started to bleed and the sharks are circling. They have crappy broadband plans and new subscribers are more aware of the options out there. Once again, thanks for the info.

There is aol broadband.

I am a byob customer for aol....I use it perhaps once in a couple months. Some of the things are hard to get elsewhere they do offer. I mostly use it to get information on people.

For alot of people I wouldn't recommend anything else, they may hurt themselves.

dieselstation, This is great!! Down to $7.95 a month and three months free to boot! And for all the other propeller heads out there, the only reason I use AOL if for Email, and that just because I was too lazy to go through the hassle of changing it. The problem is my wife and kids love it. I thought I was getting them weaned off of it, but last night I asked my wife about dropping it. Basically her response was that she was the one paying the Cable/Boradband bill and the least I could d**n well do was to pay for the AOL!!

Nuff said, thanks again! Great deal for those of us that have to keep AOL!

I don't see any point in flaming AOL users.

All I can say is that I'm glad I don't use it. As the commercial goes about 7-Up...Never had it, never will.

The deal here isnt how much everyone hates AOL. Half price on anything is a good deal. That is the point of this thread. And yes AOL is gay and un Manly.

I've got kids and they love their AOL. Im on cable now but still keep the BYOS plan.

Dont flame a good deal.

There is AOL PLUS-- DSL,CABLE, And Satellite./

I used AOL Plus satellite 2 years ago when i Couldnt get broad band when i moved into the country. Using directPC . Which is a nightmare. THey advertised 400k, and you would only really get 200k. Using AOL plus satellite i would get 800k to 1200k. And for only $39.99 a month when directpc was $59. Based on that AOL ruled.

That was a hot deal on sat service back then.

Here's the key. you do not have to use AOL, you may open up a IE window or Netscape. I use comcast@home or whatever it is now. Funny thing is i can get AOL plus cable service for $5 cheaper a month that, what i use now.

And directPC used to cap me @ 200mb tops a day, no cap on aol. 3 gigs a day no problem.

NO MORE THAN 3 SECONDS!....yeah nuking AOL CDs in an old microwave is definitely a satisfying sight...i finally got my parents to get rid of that POS software...talk about a pain in the a** showing them that they could use the FULL screen with internet explorer to surf the net....i stopped using my AOL email address on their account a long time ago and everytime i would check it - there would be over a 100 spam mails that AOHELL had to of signed me up for....
...if you haven't seen it yet, the new JUNO commercial making fun of AOHELL's price is great!

So all you Bring Your Own Service people out there, give aol a call. they'll reduce it for you. the tech even gave me 3 free months.

edit: here's the phone number: Billing Services: (800) 827-6364

that's what they did to me also. But after using it for a month, my bill was like $250.
They forgot to mention that i can only use it for like 15 hrs a month. Or something like that, so it's not unlimited

BYOA is unlimited - you might have signed up for their limited mothly plan by mistake...

Very true that if you can get something for half the price is a god deal.

$3.50/mo.

I had AOL for several years until I got DSL. At that point, I switched to their bring your own access plan just because I was heavily invested in the email address (business cards with it printed, etc.), but was using no other AOL services whatsoever (why would you?). I had that for a year at around $15 a mo. Finally, I decided "it was time," called up aol's canceling department (which doubles as sales, it seems...They do not want to let you go). Well, the guy asks why I'm cancelling, and I muttered something about proprietary blah blah blah, and also that $15/mo for email only was ludicrous. He said something like "oh yeah, that is expensive," then told me about the service they offer (but don't bother telling anybody about) for that situation. Costs $3.50/mo. Email only & BYOA (I don't know if IM-ing qualifies as an extra service, but I didn't really care, either). I ended up telling him 'no' all the same (possibly out of spite for a year of 400% costs), but have talked to a lot of people using aol because they don't want to lose the email address. Spread the word..

Note: May have been either $3.95 or $3.00, I don't recall, but it's very close.

Just to add to the "Some people can't get over aol" discussion

When I was a tech support dude for Earthlink *cough* last month *cough*, I got a lot of calls from former Aol users and their woos. More than half of them canceled by the time I told them they had to click a seperate icon to get their email. It was almost sad. You'd be surprised at how pissed people get when you tell them you have to click twice instead of once.

Common Aol questions (Mostly coming from the "daring" few who tried to surf without the Earthlink software):

- I downloaded the software, but when I turned on the computer, it wasn't there (Um... you need to click on the file you downloaded, its called "INSTALL EARTHLINK TA2003")
- How come I have to click on outlook express to get my email and why does it make a stupid ringing sound instead of "YOU HAVE MAIL"
- WTF? I have to click seperate icons for internet, email, and instant messages? WHY ARE YOU COMPLICATING MY LIFE? (Heh, I get that a lot)
- How do I get around using this Internet explorer? I normally just click on the icon and it showed a bunch of websites for me to go to.
- Why is IE so ugly?

Want something productive to do with those AOHell cds, the look no further than http://www.nomoreaolcds.com. They're collection 1,000,000 aol cds and when they get that they are going to send trucks filled with them back to aol and dump them on their property. Viva La Revolution!!!!

Lets face it people, there are two types of people out there. Those who buy a Dell dude! and subscribe to AOL, and those who build their own boxes and also realize the waste AOL is.
Hey, I bought a dell and I hate AOL. I reinstalled windows just to get rid of it. I've used a normal isp since 1993.

Man that is terribly false. Just because I have a Dell doesn't mean I'm an AOL lover. You suck.
