O.K. all, here is the problem. I downloaded the aol6.0. Did not have any luck with aol, computer got locked up on step 5- connecting to network. So, I went back to aol 5.0. Now, I can only get to the main screen of AOL and the AOL network, I can't go anywhere else, such as MSN, YAHOO, or ANANDTECH. SO, what have I done. I called AOL and went through the steps of deleting alot of stuff, the main item was the AOL adapter and a couple of others. That didn't work, so the tech. told me to delete ALL of the AOL files I had. I hung up and did that. Reloaded AOL (as recommended), still no good. Decided to delete ALL internet items including IE and start fresh. No help, I get the same problem. Reloaded WIN98, reloaded AOL, NO good. same problem. Decided to try MSN or NETZERO, but will not connect to network. Tried a new MODEM, deleted the old driver and installed the new one. No help. I AM AT A LOSS!!! anybody have a problem with this? Could it be the BIOS or a hardware problem.? Any help would be appreciated.

I think that aol 6.0, like most versions of aol, has messed up your computer. The tech, like most aol techs, also added to the screwup.

Unfortunately, I don't use AOL, and there aren't many people here who do either, since AOL are/were banned from here. However, I can suggest a few things.

Uninstall, then reinstall Dial-up networking (Control panel->Add/remove programs->Windows Setup)
Go to network configuration (Control panel->Network), make sure the following are on the list of installed components: Dial-up adapter, TCP/IP, Client for Microsoft Networks. If not, add them.

If this doesn't work, reinstalling windows and installing dialup networking should fix it.

Saw something the other day about lots of problems with AOL 6.0. Probably changed a bunch of registry settings. Try the previous advice. If it does not work, do a clean install. And ditch AOL.

There is actually a class action lawsuit against AOL going on, due to the way AOL takes over your system and changes your settings. If you can, you should ditch AOL.

I've had to go in after several who tried to "upgrade" to this. Nothin but probs. Like the others said, drop aol. The only thing you lose, if you count it a loss, is your address (@aol). They also filter what's brought into their "community". shine that!! If I want to see sites on Cars, by golly I want all the sites, not just the ones that kissed their butts!!

AOL is bad news -- it messes with almost everything in your computer, your registry, your dialupnetworking settings. pretender has some good tips, but the only way to completely roll back is to reinstall your windows =( or use SystemRestore (WinME) to get back to a restore point.

in the future if you decide to use AOL, set a restore point first, or GHOST your system so you can get back to a clean, working setup.

tell your friends about the problems...

Seems to me I heard about lots of problems like this when AOL5 came out. HMMMMMM AOL sucks. The best use for AOL is those really nice coasters they send you in the mail. The nice shiny surface makes a great mirror, too, if you're in a hurry. Even kind of fun for playing fetch with old Fido. Plus, the USPS would be out of business without them.

I wish AOL still gave out those diskettes. Since they stopped mailing them I've ran out of blank disks to make bootdisks out of.
