Apache: authenticate through eDirectory?

I'm doing my reseach and RTFMing, but this place is chock full of net gurus, so I thought I'd ask here too.

I have an Apache web server (v 2.0.44) that is currently running on a Windows 2000 Server. My users all authenticate through a Novell login to eDirectory. I don't know much about eDirectory other than it is an LDAP directory.

Does anyone know the steps to have Apache force authentication of users through the Novell eDirectory LDAP? Is the authentication itself secure/encrypted? Is the conversation "here's a userid and password pair - do they match?" (more so than here's a userid, tell me the password).

I definitely want to avoid another login for my users to have to deal with.
