Apartment Gender Discrimination

So, I'm apartment hunting here in Toronto (for a room). My new enemy is the phrase "females only", which is stupidly on like half the listings. This is really starting to piss me off, because all the decent-looking places have this phrase attached.

Yes, I know because I'm looking for a shared place that legal discrimination doesn't apply. But a ton of these are some random landlord looking to fill up a 4-bedroom house with girls only. The landlord doesn't actually live in the place. I'm perfectly okay if a person in a house is looking for same-gender only roommates. But when the absentee landlord is looking for "roommates", I feel this is a slap in the face to males.

Why can't they decide to rent out all the rooms to "males only"?

Think about this one though, would you really want to live in a males only place?

No.. just like you would not sit on a couch if they had one in the mens room.

Ever been to college?

I'm in college right now and living with two other guys but only two other guys. Much more and I'd get sick of all the filth. My apartment has some girls to balance that out.

My landlords have always preferred males. In their experience they find at the college age girls are messier than guys. I'm not sure how true that is, but that's their own experience so I do know of at least one place that caters to males.

I really don't like this assumption that girls make everything clean. Girls with long hair make the bathroom look like Chewbacca just showered. Then there are always hair-dryers/straighteners etc all over the place.

Cleanliness really matters about the person, and not the gender. Dirty people from both sexes, and clean people from both sexes.

Well, since you're looking for a shared space, if those existing tenants aren't comfortable with a male roommate you're SOL.

I guess those landlords are assuming an all-women tenancy would be less likely to treat the place poorly.

Someone is a homophobe!

For the OP, the reason is most young males are typically destructive to apartments and houses. Especially those near colleges when those young males are near other ones and get into a mob mentality. Not saying that happens with all men.

However, been there, done and seen the results. You get a bunch of 18-24 year old males together and free of parental influence for the first time in their lives and many lose all sense of reason. The aftermath of some parties I've seen.....

Not that I haven't also seen that from women, but it is not usually as prevalent.

Also it could be because the landlord hopes some pretty young girls that move in will need a manly handy man to come around every so often to fix a leaky faucet.

yeah, it surprises to think that a landlord would prefer females. all that long hair piling up in the bathtub and sink drains creates a lot of hassle.

In my experience (did apt maintenance a long time ago), women are easily as messy and disorganized (if not more so), but men tend to have higher tolerance for poor hygiene (i.e. leaving out dishes of rotten food). OTOH, male tenants are also far less "pesky" and fix simple problems themselves.

Many young men and women are messy and filthy. The difference is destructive levels. When was the last time you heard a bunch of girls during a game of quarters start arguing who's forehead is tougher and decide to find out by making a game of putting as many holes into the wall with their foreheads as they can before they stop from knocking themselves out cold? I've seen that happen before.

Or how many girls have you see have games where they can heave the heaviest piece of furniture they can out the 3rd story window of an apartment?

Man I can go on and on of the stupid destructive games based on manly strength that young men do that women NEVER do. Actually, I used to consider it a lucky night when there was only an arm wrestling match.

I'm surprised this is legal. Can you also advertise no blacks in Canada?

We all know discrimination happens on the down low but openly overt like this would get a smack down in USA.

I refer you to this post. It's the same in the States.

It's acceptable because I'm looking for a "room", not an apartment. Landlords are renting out separate rooms in a house but saying "females only". If it were some girls looking for another roommate and saying "females only", I would have no problem.

But the landlords (who don't live there) get away with this because it is a "room", so it follows the same rules as people looking for roommates.

What if the LL already has female renters committed to/in some of the rooms and the renters only want to live with other females?

My girlfriend's house has seen all girls, and a mixture of guys/girls.

She said when the girls lived there, it was a hell hole. Probably equivilent to walking into a landfill everytime you came home. Thanks to them, we are now repainting the house and ripping out the carpet and replacing some of the doors. Yes, they managed to fuck up two or three doors in the house.

Incredible.

That would be fine.

But, I am seeing things like "rooms available in a 3 bedroom apartment, $650 for one and $700 for the other two (Females Only)". This implies an entirely empty place where there should be no gender preference.

Perhaps the landlords are smart and have hidden camera's all over the place and use the live camera action to earn extra rent.

My landlord said he prefers females when I rented the place, but I usually make a good impression and get the places I'm interested in, and I got this one, too.

My experience is that there isn't much correlation between genders and trashing a place or taking care of it. I've seen both sides from both genders.
