Apartment/Roomate tips

Yo,

I need to find a place to stay while I go to college down here in Virginia. The school is in Charlottesville, and I've been looking around for an apartment. Most of them are either full or too expensive, so I'm starting to look for roomates w/ a room to rent. Any tips for anyone thats been through this sort of thing before? I'm a dude and don't really care who I live with, although most listings here are from gay guys with rooms to rent to people who would like to be "companions" (i'm serious). Anyways, any advice on what to look for, how much I should pay, what sort of paperwork is involved, etc etc? Should I apply for renters insurance, or would I be covered under the house's insurance if I move into one?

Make sure you ask them LOTS of questions.

Do you wash your dishes or am I going to have to do them?
Do you have any pets?
Are you a damn slob?

Ask everything you can possibly think of. I didn't and I hate my roomate. (and his pomeranian, damn yippy dog)

Don't you have any friends? Move in with one of them. If not, you can meet a lot of people by staying in the dorms. The dorms are small, but at least you get to meet a lot of people. A lot of hot chics too......

Anyways, get renters insurance, it's usually around $10 if you don't have much (like most college kids).

Doubt this guy has much of a choice.

Get a roommate that is busy, going to school, working, social life, etc. The less time they spend at home the less of a hastle it will be and the less likely you'll get sick of each other. Never share a phone, get your own cell or something, and nothing in your name that he is using. MAKE A CONTRACT. Put specific time frames for paying bills, house rules, etc in it, both sign and get a copy. Decent roommates are not easy to find, but if you find one it's cool. Makes it much easier to afford a really nice place.

I second this. Unless you want to guest star on Judge Judy, get EVERYTHING in writing first, signed by both roomies, and put in your safety deposit box or stored with a friend in case your copy gets lost.

My advice as i've had HORRIBLe luck with roomates,

1) You MUST get Renters Insurance, it cost me $150 for the whole year, but i only got it after i was robbed, and lost $2500 worth of stuff

2) busy roomates are the best, they're never there to bother you

3) always check about a gf/bf with the potential roomate, because that could mean you have another roomate if they spend all their time together

4) always ask for people's financial status, it may not be nice to ask, but it's very important to know if your roomate will have enough money each month to pay the rent/gas/cable etc...
