Apartment Security: Is insurance the only option?

What can you do to protect yourself in an apt besides the obvious (locking doors...)? Is insurance the only option?

Renter's insurance is dirt cheap. There's no reason not to have a policy if you live in an apartment.

You can buy motion and glass break alarms that don't require installation.

don't live on ground floors
opt for buildings that have secure front and rear entry doors
live in a relatively decent area
own a dog (if possible)

Yep, renter's insurance, living on the second level, private entrances, and having to go through double locked doors to get to me are my protections. I live in the upper level of a house, so it's kind of like an apartment

What if you live in a free state where a gun license is not required?

If there is a chance you will be home for the break-in, #4 buckshot is magical for that type of situation.
