I recall at least a few posters having lived in Binghamton or are familiar with the area.

I'll be moving there in May but I might go next week to find an apartment (waiting for confirmation from relocation peeps to make sure it is all expenses paid ).

I've been checking a few apartment rental sites. Note I'll definitely be renting and I'd think an apartment is the best thing to do. I've rented houses and apartments, and apartments are usually just way easier to deal with: good parking, snow removal, small and easy to clean up, usually nicer, easier to heat/lower bills overall, include dishwashers more often, more furnishings usually present, etc.

I've seen this particular place called Summit Chase which I remember during my interview visit, several of the recent college grads specifically mentioned it as bad. I've seen quite a bit of bad reviews. So things like that I was hoping to find out, to know what ones to completely avoid.

There seems to be a lot of apartment complexes like it... fairly large and roughly all the same.

My biggest complaint with apartments is noise, although that comes down to not having an absolute POS neighbor like one I have now.

I also care about price (specifically I'd probably want heat included, no?) and location. I'll be working in Johnson City, but it seems like Vestal, Binghamton, and Endicott are close enough (15 minute drive?).

Thanks

Did you know?

Binghamton has the highest per-capita incidence of mental illness in the USA?

It's a fact. Enjoy your stay.

Hah, well I should fit right in then!

SunnyD: What do you mean by that?

Is there particular areas I should avoid or look for? Like are there specific places that are very expensive?

I lived on the east end of town for a year while I was there. Bad, bad, bad. One day we left for classes and there was a stiff on our walkway - had been knifed over night. The area between Riverside drive and Floral Ave. was not too bad when I was there...although that was 15 years ago.

Summit Chase seemed like a nice place. I never actually lived there. It was in a nice 'pocket' of Endicott too. But that 'pocket' wasn't too large. The area around it (north and east) was a bit run down. You'd be right next to the IBM plant at Glendale park. There is also a private airport a little ways away on the opposite side of route 17c. Nothing big. Just had small props. Don't believe it was heavily used.

Personally, I would avoid most of Endicott. Especially the larger IBM plant area. IBM doesn't occupy the entire complex anymore. It was a manufacturing plant and there were some spills/leakage back in the in the 80's (I think, maybe the 70's; I don't remember the details). Anyways, there are lawsuits and what not going on because of people getting sick, etc, etc, etc. In short, don't go near there.

I'd check out Vestal and Johnson City. Both were fairly nice areas.

I grew up in Owego, NY; not too far from Binghamton. Even went to SUNY Binghamton. Lived in an apt in Vestal for senior year. Just moved away in 2006.

Greetings from Endicott NY!

I just need to point out that I live three blocks from the IBM buildings and am not sick Anyway, this is for the OP. I can help answer any specific questions you may have. I have lived in the Southern Tier area of NY all my life (grew up in Apalachin, NY - between Endicott and Owego). To be fair, there are parts of Endicott that are going downhill (sadly). However, the north-western area (near and including Endwell) are still very nice.

Actually, the small house (really an over-garage apartment if you ask me) right next-door to me is being vacated right now. The college student that was renting the place is moving out this week. I don't know if the owner has another tenant lined up, but if you would be interested in renting your own little house (as opposed to living in an apartment building) it is a nice neighborhood.

Go to hell Snatchface. We're friggin' amazing here.
Oh wait.

I'd go with an apartment probably either in Vestal or Endicott (less so than Vestal) versus Binghamton. In parts of Endicott there is contamination and an ongoing investigation with IBM because of it. I've heard both good and bad things about Summit Chase, but there are other apartment complexes in the Glendale Park area that are equally nice and quiet (Jefferson Court, etc.). In Binghamton on the West side you're going to catch a lot of college kids from SUNY B who like to raise hell and make noise, but you can also find some nice quiet apartments if you look hard enough. Nothing's really all that outrageously priced.

I lived in Johnson City briefly - nice place right off the highway, across the street from Oakdale Mall and Wegmans.

Mountain Shadows, 512 Reynolds Road (aka route 201)
http://www.sallassociates.com/ - manages this place and many others. You can search on their web site for open places all over the county. Damn, prices have gone up since I lived there... but it was pretty decent.

There's another place farther up the hill on the same road that's larger and pricier. Google Maps comes up with a lot of results for "Search Businesses: Apartments, Johnson City". Jesus, I wish that had existed when I moved!

Thanks for the input all. I'll check out those links and some of the other ones I have. I need to line up a bunch of places to look at so that I can get one for sure during the time I am there next week.

I might PM some of you once I look into this more.

Spills/leakage from a plant... hmmm, nice.

I live in Endwell, about 8 or so miles from Binghamton...it's a terrible place with nothing to do. I would sooner suggest stabbing yourself in the eye then moving there

Endwell sucks, but the nearby smaller towns such as Newark Valley suck worse. At least you're closer to the "mall" if you want to call it that.

I live at Summit Chase right now. A couple comments I can give you are:

1) Make sure the apartment is big enough. I had to move kind of quickly and got stuck in their smallest 1BR apartment. It is not large enough. Also, all of the 1BR apartments have noise issues because of the placement of the water heater, washer/dryer and blower (for heat/AC). I can barely watch a movie in my living room with the heat, AC or water being heated. During the summer, I'd actually turn the AC off when I watched a movie.

2) If you go with a 1BR apartment, try to avoid the "basement" apartments. We had a bad flood around here in June of 06 and some of the apartments were flooded. SC's style of maintenance is paint over the problems. I've read some reports of people saying that they simply painted over moldy patches of the wall. Personally, I don't know if this is the truth as I've had no problems with mold.

3) Check out the little things. Here's a couple little things about my apartment that are annoying. My shower head is too low... I swear midgets installed it. I'm 6'2" so I have to lean over just to wash my hair. The floor has a bit of creakage in the bedroom as well, which can get a bit irritating .

Personally, I like living at SC because I can't stand having to go out just to do my laundry. Summit Chase and Cambridge Square are the two places in the area that I recall having laundry in unit. But the thing is, Cambridge pretty much never has anything available and their staff seemed rather rude when I spoke to them. I'm also moving into a 2BR apartment (which seem overpriced to me, but I love the layout) around April/May. To get an idea of which apartments I mean, I currently live in an Aspen and am moving into a Sarasota.

Summit Chase @ Apartments.com

As for other places....

Vestal: Probably won't be too bad and you're literally right in the middle of where everyone goes. The only thing is, Vestal taxes are high and this translates into higher rent for what you get.

Johnson City: Not too bad, but for where I work, it was a little further than I'd prefer, so I avoided JC. Johnson City is also fairly close to Vestal (simply take 201 and hop onto 434).

Binghamton: Personally, I'd never live in Binghamton. Binghamton used to be a pretty striving, busy place, but ever since the Oakdale Mall came in, Binghamton began to die out. My mom would tell me stories about how she'd go by herself into Binghamton as a young teen with no worries, but I know I'd never do that these days.

Endicott: I think this depends on where you live. The area where Summit Chase is at is fairly nice because you're out of the "inner city." The Glendale area is fairly nice and you do have close access to two grocery stores (Giant and Price Chopper) if you need to go there quickly.

Hey, so are you still living in the area then? I actually grew up just south in PA. I'm one of those PA people that practically lived in NY because the only decent city area in PA to go shopping is Scranton and that's further away than Vestal was.

Yeah, a.k.a one level of kiosks run by foreigners with no food court and an ever decreasing amount of stores each month. Awesome.
