CURSE YOU!!!!! Last week I saw a combo of this unit plus the add-on battery pack for a decent price (wish I could even remember it, but something in the area of $240'ish for the combo.) But this might just push me over the edge.

Time to give my 1000va and 1200va units a 3rd twin!

I just called customer support. BX1500 same as BR1500. BX1500 is not a discontinued model.

APC web site has BR24BP battery pack that supports the BR1500, BR1500I, and BX1500.

I have this same UPS, it's the Back-Ups XS 1500. I got it from CompUSA for $99.99 in store a little over a year ago and it is still running strong. There is a expansion for this to give you more run time, but IMO it's not needed for most users.

The only downer about this UPS is that it is loud as hell! I have seen some users remove the fan, but do so at your own risk.

Is that right?

Man, I was kind of hoping that the specs were a typo:

Audible noise at 1 meter from surface of unit 45 dBA

What kind of fan does it use? I wonder if it can just be replaced?

I don't know what type of fan it uses. my bed is about 8 feet from my ups and i REALLY do notice it at night. A vantec tornado is way louder than my ups, but my ups is still irritating none the less.

That's sort of depressing to hear. I was planning on using mine in my bedroom as well.

It looks like it's somewhere from a 40mm to 80mm fan... I wonder it the mount is standard.

i believe that this is for the XS 1500 and not the RS 1500. the models are very similar, but they are not the same:

1. only the RS 1500 has ethernet surge protection while the XS 1500 does not. from the pdf manual page 1 item 7 "connect 10/100 base-t or voip". i don't know if the ethernet surge protection on the RS 1500 has any issues with ethernet faster than 100 base-t.

2. from page 2 of the pdf manual under the "transfer voltage and sensitivity adjustment" section, the settings on the RS 1500 and the XS 1500 are different. basically the RS 1500 can handle 8 more volts on the high end than the RS 1500.

as far as i can tell the XS 1500 is the retail version of the RS 1500. can anyone explain why there are differences? am i wrong on this and is one in fact a replacement for the other?

i found one more difference:

3. from page 2 of the pdf manual under the "specifications" section the XS 1500 can only do AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation) +12V while the RS 1500 can do AVR +-12V. this means that the RS 1500 will switch over to battery less frequently and therefore the noisy fan will be heard less often (from my understanding the fan only comes on when the unit goes to battery power).

also as far as i can see both the RS 1500 and the XS 1500 support the same external battery pack from APC

The fan should only come on when the UPS is active (as in there is a blackout/brownout). Otherwise, it is silent.
I got mine sitting here, and no fan is on right now.
