I'm in Korea and this is available. Not much else is. Everything in this area is about 60% more expensive than in the US. So I really can't afford to go to a $400+ US model which will be easily $650+ here.

My one question is about the surfe protection. It says 180 Joules. The 230v international version has way less surge protection than the 110v version. Does that make sense?

I have also heard that you shouldn't pair these with surge protectors. So If I use this, it will be all the surge protection I get. Is the 180 Joules a deal breaker?

865w or 1500VA is a huge surge protector. You can use surge protectors or one of those non-protected squid things, but a 1500VA should have plenty of outlets. What the heck are you running off this thing? I have a 1500VA protecting two computers running Folding@Home 24/7 and it never misses a beat. One of those computers is a Q6600 with a Crossfired 3870 setup and multiple hard and optical drives.

I have a 1000watt PSU, E8500 OCed, 9800GX2 OCed, 5.1 speakers, and a 26" LCD I want to back-up. The PSU is a bit much for now, but I may add a second 9800GX2.

Would the 1000va version be enough for that? I really don't care much about having a long run-time with no power. I just want to be able to balance out my power and have surge protection.

The problem is that the 230v version of the 1500VA seems to have way less surge protection than the 110v US version - only 180 joules. Is that enough?

Surge protection was OK, 230V power have twice the OVERVOLTAGE tolerance in comparison to 110V power.

What of greater importance is this --> http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=84&threadid=2195709

UPSs are voltage power supplies and followed the same rules.

Looking at all the APC units on NewEgg, it seems that the surge protection number has basically nothing to do with the volt amp rating on the UPS. For example, check out this one for $109.99. Its only a 650 VA but the surge rating is listed at 320 joules. Whether or not you really need the higher rated unit is really more a matter of how much run time you need to have available on the battery. For me, I need very little run time. I just need to have enough juice for the system to be able to shut down gracefully in the event of a power outage so in my case, even a relatively low rated unit is just fine and gives just as much or even more surge protection as a more expensive one.

Your setup shouldn't be a problem as long as your speakers aren't something super high powered. I'd advise you to not connect those to the battery backup outlets anyway though. Who cares if your sound goes out? Just make sure the monitor and tower are on battery so you can shut it down gracefully.

The 1000VA has enough juice to keep power to my two computers. One is a Q6600, 2x ATI HD3870, 610w PS setup, and the other is a E2160, Radeon 2600 Pro, 380w PS. I have to shut one of them down manually in the event of a power outage. Anyway, the 1000VA is enough juice to keep both running for a few minutes.
