Apex 3201 at Amazon.com

I think there is a $5 off coupon floating around somewhere.

This and the Pioneer DV-343 are the only DVD players I have found that play my home burnt SVCD's without a hitch, menus work, FF, Rewind, slow mo, etc.... Good investment for those who have got into the Studio DV deals as of late.

Terrible for SVCD, father bought one back when compusa had for $49.99 after rebate, multiple disc go out of sync, must turn off then on all over again, bah.. works.. but is kind of an annoyance -=\

is it hackable?

very hackable! all you do is push out the DVD tray and hit 4 numbers on the remote for a hidden menu. Bit gave you a link I have had mine since Christmas works great for me...

everyone of my friends who bought apex (against my advice) took them back and bought the pioneer for SVCDs. Way better picture quality and worth the extra $30. Go do yourself a favor and buy the Pioneer DV-250 at Walmart for $98. You can't go wrong.

I hate to thread crap, but I had one of these and returned it. It can't even play some DVD's correctly, it does not show well for the player that I discovered a number of these DVD's within the first week of ownership. Check out the Nerd-out forum for more details.

I agree Pioneer is higher quality, I own 2 Pioneer DV-343's and 1 Apex 3201. I also had my mom buy and Apex 3201 (when thery were $49 after MIR at CompUSA a while back) so she could watch the SVCD's I send her and neither of us has had problems with them. My Apex will skip once or twice during a one hour movie but I have never seen it skip on an SVCD. All my SVCD's are home video burnt with Pinnacle Express if anyone is wondering. Sounds like YMMV with the Apex.

I picked up one of these from CompUSA about 6 months ago for $59.99... I could not be happier (well, actually I could if it actually showed meaningful names for MP3 files).

Those of you having problems, I would STRONGLY recommend installing the latest firmware for both the board and drive- I had lots of issues out of the box, but with the updated firmware, it will play anything I throw at it.

A google search will find the firmware easily.

I agree. It is a great little DVD player AFTER you upgrade the firmwares. There are actually TWO firmwares that you need to upgrade. One for the system board, the other for the drive mechanism itself. Once that is done, the skipping stops, and it otherwise works "as advertised".

ABC,
The Apex 1500 would not play my SVCD's properly. The menu screen didn't work properly, FF and REW didn't work - I returned it and bought another Pioneer DV-343 when Amazon.com had them for $99. Plus, I like the LED readout on the 3201 a lot better than the 1500, I know it's just a looks thing, but it looks cooler.

I've personally never seen apex svcd quality or dvd for that matter. I just know 3 friends/co-workers who said the pioneer was much better with picture quality. Perhaps you can't tell if you just hook it up to a regular tv. I hook my pioneer 434 up via component cable to 32" wega.

mrbass,

I don't think you will find anybody arguing with you that Pioneer is higher quality than Apex.

I have a APEX 1100, and Im looking for another.

For the money Apex cant be beat I dont think. Just the fact that they do so much, so easily makes it well worth it to me. I had one that went after a few months, but I ust returned it and excahnged it at Walmart, and the 1100 has been great.

I got the apex 1200 model that plays VCD at Circus City for 62 total...Used the secret code on now it is Region Free. Just look for the white kodak logo. The ones with the yellow kodak logo will not play VCDs.

Are you sure it plays WMA ? I haven't heard of this capability in earlier players like the Apex 3201.

Keep in mind that I have tested Pinnacle Express burnt SVCD's on an Apex 1500 and 1200 and a Daewoo 3000 and they did not work properly. The only DVD players they have worked flawlessly on are the Apex 3201 and Pioneer 343. Of course YMMV, but that has been my experience.

I have an audio sync problem with SVCDs made from my DVDs. Video seems to lead audio by a fraction of a second. Latest firmware is installed. Anyone have this problem?

Other than that, this player plays EVERTHYING on ANYTHING!
