The Genica Kalua does not have a "shuffle" function at all. The Apex's do, but guess what? They shuffle the *same* way every time. So if you put the disk in a day later and hit "shuffle," you'll recognize the same order being played again.

I believe the AD-600A is better than the AD-660 because the AD-600A will play anything I throw at it, while the AD-660 must have mp3's burned a specific way or it won't work. Also, the AD-660 that I owned failed to recognize any of my CDRW's (different brands, such as Acer and Memorex).

The AD-600A also has Component Video Output and it has Karaoke. So, for $50 less (or is it $30 now)....I don't know. I just like it better. Just me though, one individual.

Went to my local C.C. and saleslady said that they had 12 of the 600a coming in today, and they were on the truck to be unloaded. She convinced me to buy the two I bought, saying that they would go pretty fast. When I came in at 3pm to pick them up, after they were off the truck, I asked how many they had left. The computer showed only 1 left. They do move fast this time of the year.

Then I lost my receipt after I picked them up, but after a call, they told me the number to give the service desk and they would print me up a new one.

Thanks..

Anyone else bought the 660 for the $99.00 (before the rebate)??

If so.... please email me the store and salesman info., etc., off of your receipt PLEASE! Or better yet... if you can scan and email me a copy of the receipt... I am willing to send you a brand new 120mm Aluminum cased Panaflo fan, or a brand new Mitsumi floppy drive (ivory).

I want to shove as many of these receipts down the CC online peoples throats as I can to try and get the $99.00 price.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

(I already purchased mine online... now trying to get them to honor the $99.00 price)

THANKS!

The AD-600A's were received by Circuit City to help cover their Sell Out of the AD-500A. This model is not listed on the website; you'll need to call the store to see if they have any left. The sale $99 sale ends today.

Questions about these models:

1) Do both the 660A and 600A have the secret menus, or just the 660A?
2) Are the special menus limited to a certain production run of the player, or do all the 660A have the secret menus?

I'm new to this Apex DVD player business. Been living off my PC Toshiba DVD-ROM too long now ...

The 500a is just a rebadged apex 600a without the mp3 support am i correct? I believe the 500b is a rebadged shinco dvd player. And the seamless branching problem has been fixed?

No Apex's have secret menus "out of the box" anymore. They are long gone. They apparently can be modified if you change the ROM Chip. See Nerd Out for more information on that rather complicated process.

The AD-500 is the AD-600A without Karoke, without Component Video Out, and without CDR/CDRW support.

The AD-500A is the rebadged Shinco (and I believe it is no longer available at Circuit City, except for maybe the Floor Model).

The AD-500B is of "unknown origin" at this time. The remote that CC has pictured is the same as the AD-660, so it may be an actual Apex (although it is not pictured on their website).

Ok it looks like i ended up picking up a 500A thought it was the 500B on their website but its the A... oh well, its a present but anyhow, why did they rebadge a shinco and what is the quality of this player? any worse than a apex 600a?

for any of you that lucked out (like me) and ordered it online for $149 and got the adjustment to $99 and are eligible for the $50 (!!!) rebate, send it out soon, must be postmarked by 9/23...i haven't done mine yet, but i'll probably do it today and send it out tomorrow. $50+ tax for an apex 660 rocks...

Hey AtRac,

I was looking through some of the Apex 500B's in C.C. and one of the salesperson told me that the player wouldn't be able to play movies with much graphics (i.e. MAtrix) because it does not have a 24-bit processor chip. What's that all about ? Any inputs here?

Thanks!:frown:

Hi Cream,

The salesman is totally and completely wrong. I actually tried out an AD-500B and it played "The Matrix" just fine.

The salesman was trying to squeeze more money out of you, I'm afraid.

The AD-500B is much nicer than the AD-500A, in my opinion. I tried out two different AD-500A's and they were both flakey. The AD-500B is more like the AD-660, but without the mp3 support (but the AD-500B will play CDR/CDRW).

"Multi" means it will autosense if the disc is NTSC or PAL. So if you have it on Multi and put in a PAL disc on an NTSC TV, it will automatically output the PAL signal.

I recommend leaving it on NTSC.

I just got a 703 for Christmas. I took it out of the box, plugged it in, turned it on, hit the "eject" button and nothing happened. It seems that NOTHING motorized inside this does anything, since it makes no noise at all when I hit the different disk buttons or the eject button. *sigh* Guess I have to deal with the crouds tomorrow and bring it back. I was looking forward to watching some of the DVDs I got for Christmas today, but I guess I'll have to wait...

EDIT:
Well, I brought that one back and my current one has problems too. It has trouble playing some DVDs, such as "The Negotiator" and "Monty Python's Flying Circus". It pauses, gets artifacts, and sometimes COMPLETELY freezes so that I have to shut it off and turn it back on. This is really starting to bug me. I know it SHOULD be a very good player, but it is not worth the hassle. Plus, the local Circuit City where my parents got it don't have any more, which means I have to wait for another shipment. I may get a cheaper DVD player and spend some extra money and get a Dolby Digital amp with speakers...

Although I love Apex DVD Players the most, I will have to say that they have NO Quality Control Department. I had to go through SEVERAL players before I found one that was decent.

With Apex, it's hit or miss. I would definately try another one out though.
