hmmm.....the CC site says this model doesn't have digital optical or digital coaxial outputs. The model from walmart.com (and now in the stores) has a digital coaxial output and it plays JPEG picture files. It's model 1100w and costs $73.xx online and the same at my local walmart. I just bought this unit and it's great!

if you are hooking this up to a receiver, Don't get it. You need optical audio. but if you want something cheap that also plays mp3's. Good buy!

Q. What model is this?

A. This is the apex AD-1500

Q.What type of outputs does it have?

A. It has 2 rca's out for video along with 1 S-video out, For Audio it has left and right analog (just the regular old white and red RCA's) and a Co-ax digital audio out!

Any other questions let me know i have several of these units and it is pretty good for the price, while they do have alot of defects and they are made pretty cheap for $69.99 who cares!

bought this at kmart on thanksgiving day for same price. only consistent knock on it (which I share) is the remote sucks. Search for "apex" or something, there have been about a billion threads on this player over the last 3-4 months, usually priced at $70 or $80.

If by hackable you mean disabling macrovision and region-free, then yes. Is it easy? As easy as burning a cd and popping it in the dvd player.

Q. Is it hackable?

A. Well yes and no, Only some serial #'s of this model are hackable others are not. The serial # must start with A,B,C or D (99% of A,B,C, and D's are hackable though there has been a few that were unable to be done. If it starts with anything else than no it is not at all. You are basically flashing it with new firmware that you burn to a CD-Rom which will let you play All regions and will disable Macrovision but does void the warrantey

Word of caution. NEVER buy an APEX (or Oritron) DVD Player if you are expecting to be able to upgrade a few months down the road by selling it on eBay.

You will not be able to sell it on eBay because Philips Corp. is actively VeRO-ing all auctions containing the words APEX (or Oritron) and DVD (the two key things you'd place in your auction to allow people to find it of course).

Don't know what VeRO is? It's companies (or individuals) who register themselves with eBay to protect their copyrights and/or trademarks and/or patents. They can submit lists of "potential infringing" auctions to eBay, and eBay will BLINDLY cancel all the items they send. There is NO way to fight this, other than suing Philips directly. eBay will claim they've just done what the copyright holder has requested. If you relist your auction again, your account will be suspended for 30 days. Do it again, your account is PERMANENTLY suspended. Also don't try to list from a new account name using ANY computer IP address that was used for your other account... ALL of your accounts will be suspended.

Why? They claim that these 2 companies (Apex/Oritron) havn't paid them patent royalties for DVD video and CD Audio playback technology, and therefore it is illegal to sell the items in the United States.

Problem is: You can buy them everywhere EXCEPT eBay currently (K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Target, Amazon, Buy.com, BestBuy, Circuit City, Sams, even grocery stores!) They "can't discuss active legal action with regards to availability in the general retail market" but "they will not allow 3rd party eBay sales at this time".

Just a word of warning. Pay $10 more for the Mintek at BestBuy or $30 more for the Daewoo at Sams, and then you won't have to worry about not being able to resell the item.

Any feedback on the MP3 Playback capabilities of this unit? Does it shuffle/random play through multiple folder levels or just one folder deep?

DealLurker-
The reason that these players are not allowed on EBay has nothing to do with what you are saying. EBay outlawed their sale because the AD-1500 and its predecessor the AD-600 violate crazy amounts of copyright laws of Macrovision and the MPAA. The MPAA is furious because it gives you the easiest way to play bootleg movies. I mean what else do you use SVCD's for? Jeez....

I quote: "A letter sent to sellers informed them that Macrovision wanted the auctions cancelled because the player "offers a product or contains material which violates their copyright, trademark, or other rights. Macrovision was designed to prevent DVD movies from being copied to a VHS tape, while regional encoding was created to wall off different parts of the world so that DVD discs could only work in certain regions. Both features were put in to prevent piracy."

Sorry DealLuker...

For a boat load of info on DVD players and their abilities go to www.vcdhelp.com and select the DVD player list on the left.
The player is great for VCD/SVCD playback and in fact can play S(X)VCD's all the way to at least 3500 kbit video + 224 audio.
My only real knocks on the player is that it is cheaply built and it has a slightly blue hue to the video. I have compared
this player to several others, but unless you do a direct compare it's hardly noticable.
I make my own SVCD videos all the time and I bought this player, although I didn't keep it. I ended up getting basically the
same player, but a 3 disc changer model 5131 for $129. Since SVCD's tend to require more then 1 disc this was a better fit for me.

One word of caution about hacking the player. If you make it region free you will not be able to play RCE encoded discs. Mostly
only being made for region 1 right now. This is an enhancement to the region encoding that requires a region to be set to allow
playback. Only about 10% to 15% of discs being made have this. If you can get a hack that actually sets a region and allows you
to change it you are all set, but I have not seen a software hack for this.

need more info from those who have this model:
1) does it get choppy during playback sometimes?
2) does mp3 feature have shuffle/random capability?
