CompUSA has a pretty nice HDTV deal. Get the Apex GB-55HD09W 55-inch Projection HDTV for only $999.99 after $500 instant rebate. No shipping availble, so order and pick it up in store. These won't last long. As a price comparison, Amazon sells this same HDTV for $1,599.

Apex, Apex, Apex.. Hmmmm,....... I've had a few of their DVD players and, well, they're crap! I hope the quality control for their TV's is far superior to their DVD players.

APEX is not known for any sort of quality. If you're looking for an interim set, this might do it, but don't think this will last more than 3 years IMO

Which should be sufficient, considering how fast Plasma and LCD TV's are becoming mainstream.

This is UltraHot and let me tell you why.

It's a BLACK TV! What's with Silver?

If this had a DVI input, I'd be all over it.

After seeing this deal, I went out to AVSForums to read about the pros and cons of RPTV, LCD RPTV, DLP RPTV, plasma etc and was seriously bummed to read about all the 'cons'

The deal breaker for me is burn in. I refuse to stretch a 4:3 image out to 16:9 (I hate the way it looks) *and* my TV runs on CNN for about 6hrs a day (sometimes more) These 2 things make me believe that I can't get a CRT RPTV. There is even one thread over there that says you should limit possible-burn-in-viewing to less than 15% of your total viewing time. Well, since CNN seems to be considered viewing that could create burn-in, I'm out of luck.

Since this is under $1000, I thought that this might be okay for a big TV that I'd only use for a couple years, but I've currently got a 28" that I've had since 1991, so the idea of ditching a TV after 3 years bothers me.

Any deals on a big 'old skool tube TV

If you are concerned about burn-in (which I will be once my HTPC is finished), I've heard that LCD Projection TV is the best best:

-Lightwieght compared to other projection or tubes
-less expensive than plasma by quite a bit
-looks great (picturewise, not the ugly silver casing)

Circuit City has a 60" Sony for a little over 3 grand, if you go smaller, you can get to around 2K I believe. Consider it an investment.

But once again, good luck finding a BLACK lcd projection tv. Who do I have to kill to get BLACK!

Limited Warranty: 3 Months (90 days)
Warranty Information: 90 Days on Labor
1 Year on Parts

What are you suppose to do Diagnose the problem yourself and order the parts after 90 days? CrapUSA offers no extended warranty. And this thing is 300Lbs with no shipping so they force you to load it in a pickup and have at least 3-4 people try to lug that thing into the living room?

NO THANK YOU!!!!!!! You can pay 300 bucks more get a decent warranty on a name brand like Panasonic and have it delivered and setup in the room you want for free. The installation charge alone is worth the extra 300 bucks.

IMO...

A properly calibrated RPTV still provides the best picture quality. Still better than LCD and Plasma.

Also some stretch modes are better than others. I watch 4 x 3 TV in stretch mode on a new model Mitsubishi and I really can't even tell it's being stretched unless there is text at the bottom or edges of the screen.
