WTF that was no apology. not once did he even come close to it in that speech.
He just talked about the evil men do. and as civilized nations that we should do our best to avoid it.
I want to rip and tear into the moral relativism on display in those words.
But there are multiple meanings to be found, and it's difficult to know which to focus on. "The evil men do" could be slander on US action and participation in WW2. Or it could be a neutral message geared towards the purpose of unity and healing. Moving on, as it were.
For myself... I grew up in a world where Japan meant Nintendo. Meant the creativity and enjoyment found in my childhood. To me that connection we share in a common culture not just humanizes post war Japan, but inclines me to call them friend. I hold no grudges for WW2, for that was my grandfather's war and not something that ever harmed me.
But I don't think I could stand whitewashing who it was the invaded all those Asian / Pacific nations, with the rape, murder and torture that followed. Nor would I forget that it was us who had to wage war to stop it. There was nothing evil in us waging that war, in our bid to stop those actions.
I will not approve of any person that would call that into question.
