Could use some opinions, here we go: My sister and I are having a debate, about what foods you can and can't eat at work. What spurred this debate was a disagreement I had a while back at work with a guy in the cafeteria. I had an Indian girlfriend at the time and she cooked some fish curry (which was delicious BTW) and then I packaged it up and brought it to work for the next day to reheat in the microwave. Some guy in the cafeteria expressed his disapproval, not in a hostile way but definitely made it known that he didn't think too highly of my food and was indicating that I shouldn't bring it in because of the smell in the cafeteria. Well I barely knew this guy and took slight offense to his casual and unsolicited opinion. I merely replied with something along the line that he can mind his own business unless he wants to buy and cook the food I eat.

Fast forward to today as I am recalling the story to my sister and she also thinks what I did was rude. Funny how the Arabs, Indians and other foreign coworkers didn't mind and some even came over to ask and compliment on how delicious the food smelled. My sister thinks that I have no consideration for my coworkers and I should bring in something "less offensive". I told her that being mad about food odor in the cafeteria is like being mad about a shit smell in the bathroom. Sometimes I want some home cooking and don't want to eat a sandwich, fast food or other outside food. I didn't think the smell was offensive, it was just noticeable when combined with the Indian spices. Furthermore its not like I ate the food back at my desk and smelled up the office space, this was eaten in the cafeteria. Now she refers to me as "THAT guy". So whatsup? Rude or not?

fish should never ever be reheated in a microwave. ever. not at home, not at work, not at 7 eleven, not on friday, not on the moon.

and especially not with indian spices.

they will have to burn that building down to get the smell out.

This. The smell of seafood makes me want to vomit when someone decides to reheat it in the microwave at work, especially shellfish.

Seafood is terrible re-heated anyway. People who make popcorn in the microwave at work piss me off.

You were incredibly rude and in the wrong. At the workplace, you should also hold the concerns of your co-workers in mind when you bring food in to re-heat. If something will stink the place up, don't bring it.

Cmon, I'm just reheating it, not cooking it. The smell doesn't linger around for long and doesn't stink up the place like cooking does. Reheating is just warming up for less than 2 minutes, not cooking for an hour or more.

We cook our fish outside on the BBQ. Started cooking bacon there as well as the wife doesn't like the smell lingering in the house all day.

We are an incredibly diverse company, being part of a larger international organization. We have a big variety of foreign foods reheated daily in the cafeteria at work, including other fish, curry and other dishes I can't even identify.

Yeah, I almost always cook fish out on the grill. Although it's alot better now that I put an actual range hood in that vents outside instead of those cheap shitty ones that just filter the air and spit it back out in your house.

I have to agree with those that say the OP is "That Guy". I hate it when someone heats up fragrant food in our office kitchen. It is not so much that it smells bad, it just that I don't want the smell lingering in the workplace all afternoon.

I agree with you to an extent. I hate when some guy brings a subway sandwhich with extra onions or a pepperoni pizza and eats it back at his desk. That's distracting and smelly in a place where food doesn't belong. I feel that the cafeteria is the only place where this should be permitted.

The smell didn't stick around and didn't stink up the place? Yeah, that's why a guy you barely knew said something to you. I'm sure guy really wanted to talk to you and become your new best friend. He just didn't know how to approach you.

*chuckle* I'm eating a subway pizza sub at my desk, right now.

We don't have cafeterias at my employer... actually, none of my employers ever have. Many of us eat at our desks, and we're used to the smell of food lasting most of the day.

But I *hate* it when my coworkers make coffee. It makes me sick to my stomach, because they make it so strong. 22 spoons of ultra-double-high-intensity-bold coffee in a half pot brewer. It's enough to make the paint peel off of the walls.
