Fish is the worst thing you can put in a microwave at the office. Popcorn is the 2nd worst. Both should be banned.

OP sounds like a dick.

This. The smell of seafood makes me want to vomit when someone decides to reheat it in the microwave at work, especially shellfish.
I think I'm going to get a bag of shrimp after work today.
And heat it in a microwave. (At home.)

Tasty little aquatic buggy critters. (But yeah, they do sure smell up the joint for awhile.)

Could use some opinions, here we go: My sister and I are having a debate, about what foods you can and can't eat at work. What spurred this debate was a disagreement I had a while back at work with a guy in the cafeteria. I had an Indian girlfriend at the time and she cooked some fish curry (which was delicious BTW) and then I packaged it up and brought it to work for the next day to reheat in the microwave. Some guy in the cafeteria expressed his disapproval, not in a hostile way but definitely made it known that he didn't think too highly of my food and was indicating that I shouldn't bring it in because of the smell in the cafeteria. Well I barely knew this guy and took slight offense to his casual and unsolicited opinion. I merely replied with something along the line that he can mind his own business unless he wants to buy and cook the food I eat.

Fast forward to today as I am recalling the story to my sister and she also thinks what I did was rude. Funny how the Arabs, Indians and other foreign coworkers didn't mind and some even came over to ask and compliment on how delicious the food smelled. My sister thinks that I have no consideration for my coworkers and I should bring in something "less offensive". I told her that being mad about food odor in the cafeteria is like being mad about a shit smell in the bathroom. Sometimes I want some home cooking and don't want to eat a sandwich, fast food or other outside food. I didn't think the smell was offensive, it was just noticeable when combined with the Indian spices. Furthermore its not like I ate the food back at my desk and smelled up the office space, this was eaten in the cafeteria. Now she refers to me as "THAT guy". So whatsup? Rude or not?

Not really. You don't have a choice what it smells like.

I'd say there should be a balance. I'd take his concern into consideration and maybe try to pick a particular spot in the cafeteria that might not affect him as much. But ultimately it isn't up to him to decide what you eat. If it is unavoidable it is unavoidable. If he doesn't like the cafeteria at his place, it is something to take into consideration when you pick a job.

If you get "distracted" at work by the smell of food then I'm sorry but you have hardcore ADHD and should see a doctor immediately.

I think the cafeteria smells bad regardless of what you cook in there. Both the food court by my office, and our cafeteria, have a horrible stench about them that usually kills my appetite. I try to avoid walking into the cafeteria around lunch time for this reason.

Fish is the WORST in the microwave. Back during college in the late 90's I worked swing shift in a warehouse for a company that made circuit boards. All of the assembly engineers that worked swing and graveyard shift were Asian, and even though fish dish microwaving was essentially banned during the day, since it was like 7-8 at night when they took lunch they just ignored the ban and all of them would cook fish at the same time. Half the building near the lunch room would smell horrible the rest of the night. I never brought my lunch just because I couldn't stand going into the lunch room. So nasty.

If you don't like the smell, breathe out your mouth. Otherwise tell your nose to stop being a fucking pussing and deal with it. The fuck kind of world is this where people get to dictate what others are ALLOWED to eat because it makes the room SMELL funny.

That said people are also entitled to tell you your food smells like ass crack and you get to deal with that too. Sounds to me like both sides of this argument are acting like spoiled little children.

"HE SMELLS FUNNY!"

"HE WAS MEAN TO ME AND SAID MY FOOD SMELLS LIKE A BUTT!"

good lord... grow up

If someone's firing an air horn in the cubicle next to you, and it annoys you, maybe you should see a doctor.

Some smells can be rather invasive.

Fuck 'em. I'm on the "Haters gonna hate" side of this debate.

Tell the dickwad that the smell of his celery and aquafina is offensive to you. :sneaky:

I don't understand people's hangup over food odors either. I have no trouble at all ignoring strong food odor. That is to say, I can be smelling something I don't like, and still not have it bother me enough to even think about it unless someone asks me to render an opinion on it. In all but the worst cases, odors just aren't that intrusive to me. Don't get me wrong, I'd be quite bothered by excrement or vomit odor, but that would largely be because I knew that it was coming from something that is universally disgusting. Sometimes it seems to me that people look for reasons to impose themselves on you. It's not that what you're doing is anything more than a mild annoyance. It's that they expect you to actively preserve the little bubble of purity that they carry around with them, or believe they do. That they have some kind of right to live as if no one else exists in the world.

I will say this about disgusting sushi, at least you wouldn't have to re-heat the stuff since it's supposed to be all uncooked and that's the appeal of it. But yeah, fish has no place in the workplace. With burned microwave popcorn it's at least accidental when that shit leaves a smell, but with fish it's 10 times out of 10 you would offend the olfactory senses of somebody.

Some people think fish smells bad. Some people think mushrooms smell bad. Will we ban mushrooms at work too? I don't like the smell of reheated pasta sauce, can I ban that? Del Taco stinks to high heaven, especially their chicken stuff, so can that be banned?

Road crews are jack hammering outside my window and I'm still getting work done somehow. Seriously, you guys all have ADHD. Go see your doctor and ask him for dexedrine. Then buy a large box of condoms because dexedrine makes your sex drive super hard core!!!!!

I can't stand reheated seafood, but other than that I do not take any of my coworkers feelings or opinions into account. They're just coworkers, not friends.

Why do you people linger around long enough to complain about the smell in the cafeteria? Do some work.

Flat out, it is inconsiderate to cook fish in the microwave at work.

That's it. No other comparisons.

Curry is debatable, as it always smells better hot than coming out in your sweat (which leads to another issue... Antiperspirant is GOOD in the workplace, regardless of custom).

Popcorn? That is a hard one, as the worst is always the one with "butter flavor". Some are worse than others, but if you are not EATING it, the smell is rather sickening.

You CAN cook curried fish at work, not wear Anti-Perspirant in August after going to the gym, fart at will and "cultivate" a foot oder that could kill small children. Nobody is outlawing that, and only a few actually have anything against it in their company policy.

But if your breath stinks to high heaven, it is usually a good idea, unless you want to alienate everyone around you, to start packing some Dentyne.....
