The point is that you can't please everybody. I'm not going to stop eating/breathing/living etc... to avoid offending even one person.

nobody wants you to stop eating, they just want you to bring something else to work

You were fine. If they don't like it, they can buy you lunch. If they don't do that, they can fuck off.

So long as it stays in the cafeteria, you are in the green. Designated eating places in a multicultural environment are gonna smell funky sometimes. If you really think what someone else is eating smells that horrible, let them know that you don't like the way whatever they are eating smells like then let it go. Either they will not bring it in again or they will and you just have to deal with it.

If you're a real man, you can ask to try some. A lot of things smell really bad but then taste ridiculously good (esp. asian foods), and once you know that they taste good, the smell goes from being bad to not bothering you or actually smelling good.

I'm honestly amazed how many people are of the mind "it offends me but does not harm me, and so it shouldn't be allowed". I thought this was AT, land of the armchair libertarians.

Red herring.

Nobody said you had to, just like nobody SAID that you are not allowed to fart in someones face (legally, at least).

We aren't saying it should be illegal, or even that someone should be punished for it. We are saying it is rude and inconsiderate and most people would not do things like that. It is along the lines of farting in a crowded elevator, or leaving a mess in the microwave when your food splatters all over, or answering a phone call in the middle of a meeting, or driving "my own goddamn speed" in the passing lane...

Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you should. It is a giant faux pas and anyone that does shit like that is simply being a stubborn, inconsiderate prick.

OP is "that guy." He is the douche bag that doesn't consider other people and thinks that just because he has the right to do something it makes it socially acceptable.

farting in a crowded elevator,
Rude, disgusting and shit is universally abhorrent
leaving a mess in the microwave when your food splatters all over,
Indicative of a lazy, inconsiderate slob who leaves messes for other people to clean up
answering a phone call in the middle of a meeting
Probably a pretentious asshole, considerations could apply for emergencies etc... but I would still excuse myself from the room
driving "my own goddamn speed" in the passing lane...
Unsafe driver, delays all other drivers in the lane. Either clueless or also pretentious.

My point is that heating smelly food is not universally considered offensive, unlike your examples which are either unsafe or completely inconsiderate in nearly any circumstance. I even got compliments, plenty of them actually because the food smelled good. Maybe not from the white folks, but the foreigners liked the food. Its not like the cafeteria smelt like a fish market and its totally possible that even some of the white people in the cafeteria enjoyed Indian food.

So back to my previous point where you can't please everybody, I also don't expect to NOT be inconvenienced by other people's actions. Somethings are universally socially unacceptable and the point is that heating curry is unacceptable only to a select few. And I'm not going to let good food go to waste so I can please everybody with an opinion.

The idea of reheating fish in the microwave is nasty to me, but it wouldn't have bothered me in the least if someone did that in the cafeteria. People bring food to their actual desks all the time and I can smell it - THAT is frowned upon. People do it anyway though, and seriously if you have nothing better to complain about then life must be pretty fucking good.

I am in the camp of bring whatever food you want, heat it up and eat it.

I remember a lady once at work brought a spam open the can up and ate it with using the gel as sauce. Take that for strange.

Again, people confuse consideration with crime.

You CAN do it, and although it is not directly comparable to some of the transgressions mentioned, it is still inconsiderate.

People seem to want black and white on this, but it is just grey.

Microwaved fish reeks. Period.

Making a LITERAL stink in the office, no matter where, is inconsiderate. The further that stink is from the local where it was contained/almost expected, the worse it is.

Poo stank in the bathroom is not APPRECIATED, but accepted. In the elevator? No.

Fish smell in the cafeteria is more tenuous because although it IS a cafeteria, it is still an OPTIONAL thing to have fish as compared to taking a poo.

It is all on various balances depending on how avoidable it is, and how many are genuinely taken aback by it. If people do not like it, and you can easily avoid doing it, not doing so is selfish and will be met with disdain and resentment. MANY things in life are like that, some more valid than others (such as wearing a bhurka.....).

But just face it. You were inconsiderate, you got your back up when somoene confronted you on it, you KNOW you were wrong, and you posted online to get support from complete strangers.

Go home.

lol, I luv indian food

but if you are working with a bunch of crackers, this is like taking a dump in plastic bag and leaving it under the table. While you and your restroom mates who smell your shit every day may not mind...the majority find it grossly offensive. Respect your neighbors, don't take a dump in the cafeteria. Eat your shit in your car or outside.

fish should never ever be reheated in a microwave. ever. not at home, not at work, not at 7 eleven, not on friday, not on the moon.

and especially not with indian spices.

they will have to burn that building down to get the smell out.

jim rome breaks it down

This. THIS. MOTHER FUCKING THIS.

We used to work out of a TRAILER when I work as a bagrunner @ Dulles airport. These 2 guys from Thailand would cook fish everyday and stink the place EVERY DAY. Horrible.

Ming & Sok. 2 gay dudes. Always friendly as hell though, so I don't hate them or anything, but GOD DAMN.

Might want to switch over to the arms industry, plenty of work for software developers there. Those jobs usually require US citizenship with no ties to foreign governments / corporations. As a result, non-American cuisine in the break room should be very rare, unless you count Panda Express, Taco Bell and Olive Garden.
