you were rude. but so was the other guy for saying something.

having common courtesy goes a long way. its best to not piss off people in a office if you can help it.

Heat & eat whatever you want, especially since you have the luxury of a cafeteria at the office. You can't please everyone.

That being said a guy i used to work with brought in lobster bisque, heated it in the caf, but then brought it to his desk to eat...then I had to leave the office for a while, or i was going to puke in his damn bisque.

I would have a problem with this...then it smells worse all over the office.

You are definitely in the wrong; you are at work, this is not your house. We have actually had HR put signs up in an attempt to dissuade this problem and they have even had to speak to certain people specifically in order to have them stop stinking up the entire floor.

Just curious, does HR have any actual power to stop people from doing it?

Considering that most Americans eat cold sandwiches for lunch, microwave smells remind them of their poor lunch choice. Additionally, Americans are resistant to new things from other cultures so will not take easily to strong food smells new to them.

Curry is bad enough but you microwaved fish with it!?!?!

EDIT:
Reading comprehension failure.
You are fine if you did it in the cafeteria. That is the place for eating and people are free to stay or leave.

Don't be that guy....:\

Cooking - heating Indian food in a microwave is like burning popcorn in one,the smell can never be removed and will be cooked into everything heated in it.

That smell even gets into the walls, have some consideration.....

Well, not really sure what you mean. It's not like someone will get fired for it, but I think they are hoping people will be respectful of their co-workers and not continue doing it after the discussion. If it were to continue, their managers could get involved.

Screw them, cook what you want. If you worry about what everyone thinks you'll never be happy.

Here is the bottom line. You are heating up food that is offensive to a lot of people. It isn't as if you heated up pizza and the one person complained. I'm sure everyone hates you for it. How would you feel if someone heated up a dish of fermented beans and scarfed it down?

You are being inconsiderate because it is a pungent food that is notoriously offensive. You don't have a "right" to invade the whole area with your nasty fish and curry smell. It isn't a cultural norm here. If this were India and you were heating up a steak I may tell you the same thing - knock it off.

Bottom line is that it is offensive, you know it is offensive, so quit doing it.

fish should never ever be reheated in a microwave. ever. not at home, not at work, not at 7 eleven, not on friday, not on the moon.

and especially not with indian spices.

they will have to burn that building down to get the smell out.

jim rome breaks it down

Agreed, we had a guy who microwaved raw squid once. The whole building reeked for the rest of the day. Broccoli is another thing you should never reheat in the microwave.

Think of it this way -

It is a natural process and unavoidable to fart. Everyone does it and nobody should be banned from doing it. If you had farts that would knock a buzzard off a shit wagon and insisted on dropping them in the cafeteria would you expect people to be OK with it?

If you are having something offensive then plan on going home to heat it up.

Yeah sorry OP, but if I was eating lunch in the cafeteria and smelled fish the entire time, I'd be pretty annoyed as well. Not a fan of the smell of seafood, especially reheated seafood.

In other news, someone microwaved what smells like asparagas up IN the office today, and it has smelled like farts for a good hour now.
