Appealing a grade at community college.

Grades were just posted and I needed a C to pass and ended up with a D. This was my last class of my last semester. This is all for a 1 credit health class. I want to appeal it somehow, or at least get to see how my grade was calculated. He takes points off your grade for being late, however there was one instance where i was on time and there was a sign posted saying class is canceled (yes our class number was written there) turns out the sign was for another class. If i can get those points back ill be up to a C. I scored high on the only two exams, highest in the class on the second one. I know the dpt has recieved alot of complaints against this guy, but he has been there for a while. Do you guys think I have a chance? if so do i just contact the dpt head?

sure you can go to the dpt head. doubt anything is going to happen though.

but i am sure its more then the fact you missed a class. if it is then you had a very low C.

Sounds like you may have a valid point. Request to meet with the Prof, if you get no where try the dept head or dean of school. Unfortunately, the other people besides the Prof can usually not do much, as the Prof always has final say in all grades. One problem you have is that if this was so significant (the late class) you should have brought it up earlier, not after the semester was over...

I really dont want to meet with the professor I've talked to him before about the late thing with the sign on the door and he pretty much said that I should have checked to see if he had signed the note on the door. I'd really like to talk to someone with him in the room.

Your syllabus should tell you how your grade is calculated.

Gotta go with this guy. I spent 2 semesters at community college before transferring and it was the biggest cake walk carrying 17 credits per semester. The only way you fail a class like that is being lazy.

I may be lazy but im not that lazy to end up failing this class. I did all my papers and assignments, scored the highest out of 20 students on the final. The prof. just takes off a large amount of points for tardies.

Was it in the syllabus? yes? then why you whinnying now? you shouldn't have been tardy. I doubt being tardy once is going to drop the grade.

either way you should have tried harder so it didn't' make a difference.

Fixed. If you knew he took off points for being tardy, you should get there on time!

What do your other grades look like? To be honest, I would go to them and see if there is anything you can do. Do not go in there with a pissed off attitude though. Teachers will always take up for one another, because while it is your degree, you are gone in a few years and have maybe only had a few encounters with each teacher. These professors are working with eachother on a constant basis typically.
