I just bought the display at Palo Alto, apparently the mad rush of people have left this OOS in places. Not sure if any NoCal stores have NIB units but if you can find a nicely preserved display model this might be the way to go.

Fry's SKU 4106693

Edit:

I am typing this from a PC and my new Apple 30" cinema display.

Finding a compatible low cost gaming video hard seemed hazy at first but one person on usenet reported success so I decided to give it a try. Voila, 2560x1600 without a hitch!

The Geforce 6600GT is dual-link capable. The PNY Verto 6600GT Dual DVI + HDTV 128MB DDR3, part # VCG6600GAPB seemingly impliments this properly.

I'd rather get 2 of these. The 30" can't run on PC as of yet correct? Or maybe I'm confused...

I'm diving into that now, I think an SLI solution would drive it, or any card that has Dual-Link DVI output.

Edit: Asus V9999GE and Dell 6800GTO have dual-link DVI.

I really hope MSRP drops to this eventually. That high of a resolution would be awesome for doing work, heh.

A card with a dual link DVI port is a necessity (meaning that SLI cards, unless they have dual link ports won't work).

I too would rather have dual 2405's, but almost a grand off is super hot.

Gah!

Hopefully this doesn't come anywhere close any shops near MA. But chances are slim

Many newer NVidia Quadro cards can drive this with Dual-Link DVI as well.

SLI does not help.

Yeah, needing a dual link DVI card is kind of a deal killer. Dual link cards are just too expensive.

3 2405fpw's would cost about the same as 1 30" Apple LCD and a dual link card.

Mmmm 3 screen's of 24" goodness...

Let us know how that turns out! Not only would I need to buy new video cards to go with those, but a bigger desk too! Although it would make graphics/video work just insanely fun to do.

Do the 2405's do the same resolution as the Mac's though (2560x1600)?

Just out of curiosity, why would you prefer the Dell over this, other than cost of course? Does it have a better latency?

*Please, no mac vs PC war!*

no. Dell 2405fpw is 1920x1200. The cost is the main reason why many people prefer the 2405 over 30" mac. MSRP of $1200 vs $3000.

I'd rather get 4 2005fpw's rather than 2 2405fp's for less. To each his own.

I'm just kidding since I'm staring at 2 2405fp's as I type this.

Agreed ..... however, one could make the argument that 2 2005FPWs would be the way to go instead of the 2405FPW. They were just on sale for $384.40. I personally am holding out for the 2405FPW once it hits the $800 price point. I've got 2 21'' trinitrons now .... that give more real-estate than the 2405FPW will ..... but about 140lbs less

Well, also, I like Dell's panels better than Apple's. The 2405 I had looked nicer than the 23" cinema displays that they have at work (not use by us, but I've checked them out). The sharpness just overall clearity was better on the Dell.

Hmm, too bad its PNY though.

Don't be surprised if by the end of this year Dell has a 30+ inch widescreen LCD for under $1999. My guess would be $1799 US.

just get a 6800gto off of ebay or here for ~250-300
it's a capable enough card
hot price on the display, but like everyone else has said, i'd rather just stick in the 20-24" range
in person, the 30" leaves me in awe

Their customer service was exceptionally nice. I called in to see if they would honor this price in the Chicago area and originally the CSR said "of course! Our other locations are our competitors too", but I insisted that they confirm the price for me before I drove out, which they said that Fry's won't pricematch Fry's. The CSR was very confused by that and I was very dissapointed!

They were very nice, but it would be nice if they would honor prices that you find at one store at the rest.
