Before the iPhone in 2007 how many companies made just rectangles with screens? With no hardware keyboards, nothing. I think there was 1 phone, the LG Prada. Now most smartphones do it. After the iPhone was a success. And after saying the iPhone WOULDN'T be a success...

I'd say that that was due to the limitations of the available hardware rather than design decisions. Large touch screens became available at the right cost to all the manufacturers at about the same time thats why you suddenly saw them popping up everywhere.

Before the Motorola Startac, how many clamshell phones were there? Before the RAZR how many slim profile clamshell phones were there? Before the first slide out keyboard phone how many were there? Phones with similar functions will have similar design ques. Next up in the evolution of the phone design will probably be some bi-fold amoled samsung phone.

I have a LG TV in front of me and the only reason I know it's an LG is because it has the LG logo! TV's are just screens, and the modern smart-phones is similar. The less complex something is the harder it is to make them different. If Apple wants their products to be more recognisable then they should put their damn logo on the front of the device! However right now they are trying to patent anything that is black, and has a screen! What's next- are they going to try and stop the sale of every black TV as it resembles an Ipad/phone? I am sure with a little resizing, a tweak to the aspect ratio that my TV would also look very like an Ipad!

So unless Apple invented black or touch screens then this nonsense needs to stop.

Do you remember Apple's original iPods? Very very simplistic looking. It's a rectangular device with a rectangular lcd screen on the top half with a circle that housed the controls on the bottom. The iPod Classic as it's now called has remained largely the same as the original iPod. The design is the same even if it has been tweaked a lot. You can't tell me the design isn't simplistic, and yet, it is very distinctive design. Just because it is simplistic does not mean it can't be distinctive and iconic at the same time. There is a very loose set of rules that governs what makes a design iconic but there is no entry on requiring a design to be complex or simplistic.

You make it sound like the world had never seen a rectangular device with screens before the iPhone. In reality, it was already trending that way; with or without apple. The iPhone most likely accelerated the process; i don't doubt that at all, but to say every smartphone marker suddenly started copying apple after the iphone was released is dishonest at best. For example, take a look at HTC's touch phone lineup from 2004 to present. There hasn't been a sudden change in design after the iphone:

That's not what I am saying. What I am saying is that it's a complete BS to try and ban a device that is a plain in design as a modern phone based on the fact that it resembles another phone. Once TV's became just big screens and not screens with speakers on the side and channel/volume,tuning buttons they all started to look the same but I don't remember anyone been sued out of the market for it.

This is a very good point. Most TVs look exactly the same besides the logo and some other minor details, yet you don't see all of the TV manufacturers suing each other.

wouldn't the TV issue be because the original patents on that design have expired?

(i know nothing about the lifespan of design patents)

Call me when Apple can do free turn by turn navigation and Flash. Until then, cry more.

I love the flash argument. Keep on trying to revive a dead technology.

Flash is on my HP touchpad. You know the only thing flash has been used for so far? Banner ads. Flash has given me banner ads on a tablet. I have been rejoicing ever since. YES, BANNER ADS ARE BACK!

Edit: and the iPhone does both of those things. They arent installed on the stock models, but it is available.

Flash is a dead technology? Whatever makes that Apple Kool-Aid taste sweeter but Flash is far from dead on the internet.

Not dead, but dying. Can you tell me with a straight face that flash is a growing technology?

Banner ads ... *looks at Preware Adblock* What banner ads?

Having Flash on my touchpad makes it a lot more versatile, I was able to watch On The Moon episodes straight on the Weebls site, instead of having to go find a youtube copy.

But more than that, Apple users are being straight up denied the option of a feature that the competition has, and for some bizarre reason feel superior for this lack...

To me this is like Lexus selling cars without rear-view mirrors and people defending it because sometimes tall vehicles have headlights that shine too bright in the mirror.

If you don't like Flash there are options for disabling it, but to get uppity about not having it at all is a little demented.

What is a "plain" design? The iPhone and iPad are minimalistic in design but that doesn't mean they are not unique. Samsung had a line of HDTV's a few years back that were kind of unique even if they were for the most part large rectangular boxes. Can't find the images of the model I'm talking about now but you could tell at a glance it was a Samsung HDTV. Just because the design isn't fancy doesn't mean it isn't unique.

What if I don't care about Flash at all? There's a reason why I use Flashblock on my desktop computers. I find most sites that I visit, and this is only me, so it is hardly a critical feature or even an often used feature for me.

Bad car analogy is still bad. Flash is nowhere near as useful as rear view mirrors. Rear view mirrors increase safety and is used every time you get in a car. Flash...depending on the sites you visit, you can go weeks without needing Flash.

Agreed.
