I recently purchased a ADC student membership through Apple and I received my packet in the mail the other day. Included in the package was a t-shirt and 2 DVDs. One was the 2007 Developer DVD Series - July 2007 while the other was MAC OS X Tiger. Now what exactly is the Tiger Software? Is it a legal copy of the software, can it be sold?

I currently do not own a apple computer but use them at school. I will be purchasing a Mac Pro in the near future. I dont have any use for the software (if it is a full copy).

The Tiger Software, as you put it, is the Operating System, OS X, version 4, codename Tiger.

I suppose you could sell it, but I have no idea what systems it would run on. Why did you join the ADC if you don't have a Mac?

Because I want to develop for Apple. Like I said I use the Apple computers at my college. Apple also gives a HUGE one time discount on a purchase thats even better then the student discount.

Anyone else what? I answered your question... you could sell it, sure, but until you know what kind of system it is made for, there is little point to it. For example, my restore copy of tiger does not work in my friend's powerbook. And I think that the Core 2 machine's discs will not work in my Core.

Another quick note... you don't need to be a member of the ADC to develop for the mac. All you need is a Mac, and XCode and its associated things installed. Interface builder, and other things are included. And once Leopard drops and we get shiny Core Graphics support, the homebrew stuff will start to look crazy better.

you cannot sell ADC software. It's a license for help with development/testing. It's more then NFR, it cannot be transferred in any way/shape/form. Similar to the MSDN from Microsoft.

I see. But what exactly is it? Is it a official copy of OS X Tiger? What can it be installed onto? Dont all macs come with OS X Tiger installed? Is there a installation code that needs to be entered?

No there is no code required for installation.

The point of it could be that if you have an older machine with 10.3, you could upgrade it to 10.4, but aside from that I really am not sure. Are you sure that it is a Tiger disc (I mean does it say it on there?) or could it be the Leopard Beta.

I see....so there is no key required?
It says Mac OS X Tiger Version 10.4.6
I believe I am getting a copy of Leopard soon as well

Hrm, well, that is certainly an older copy... latest release of Tiger was 10.4.10.

To the best of my knowledge, no Apple OS requires a key, however most all of their Pro software does (Quicktime Pro, Final Cut Pro, Aperture).

So I have no idea what you are supposed to do with the disc.

What all is on the Developer DVD? I guess XCode, and associated programs? Maybe X11 as well...

This is exactly the reason to join. The Student discount on MBPs for example is $200, but the one time discount for the Student Dev program is $400 - $99 to sign up so you net $301 off instead of $200.

The one time discount...how big is that discount? How about after you use it? Will you get any other discounts besides the student discount?

Well, the Mac Pro that I was thinking about buying was about $400-450 less. Its a one time, one product only purchase and cannot be combined with any other discounts. The ADC has its own online store. You cant get the discount in a apple store or on the regular apple online store.

Does the ADC membership also give the discount on upgrades when ordering? I know that with teh Student discount, the price is reduced, and then if I was say, upping the HDD in a system, and it normally cost $75, I can get it for $67. And I think the same applies for the software that you can get preloaded on there.

And with that preloaded software, I would assume that they would include the media, but also, why can you only select one thing? What if I want iLife, and Aperture installed? What then?

Would you mind giving us the list of prices with the discount at the ADC store?

The thing with the ADC that you get also, is access to download almost the entire apple library. (I've not checked software, only OS's)
