On another note as a general question, with Android phones that can do wireless charging, does it still work fine with the phone in a case?

That depends on the case. Leather or plastic cases of reasonable thickness are fine. Metal or magnets will interfere.

No matter what Apple does it's going to be "bad" to people who simply don't like Apple or want to find a flaw.

Had they not scaled it on the bottom of the phone to have no black bar there, then people would say it is bad because there is too much black empty space on the top of the phone.

I personally think had it not scaled on the bottom and added that black bar on the bottom but it did have to add the "bar" to the top so that it doesn't go behind the notch, that it being "off centered" would play tricks on my eyes and be distracting when watching videos on it. It's basically doing an aspect fit vs. aspect fill, but in aspect fit mode making sure the borders on the top/bottom of the phone are of the same size. I have no problem with it.

I criticize Apple and Android manufactures when I feel they drop the ball on stuff. Samsung dropped the ball with the S8/Note 8 fingerprint sensor, but in retrospect at least they have fingerprint sensors . The X costs over $1000, it better damn well be designed well, and I don't think it is. They have moved away from the symmetrical design, instead opting for an ugly notch that intrudes on the display, and for some reason keeping the same thick side bezels. Physically the phone just does not look as good or as well designed as something like the Note 8 or S8 (or the upcoming V30). Never mind omitting previous features like TouchID. Half the time I unlock my phone, I do it while I am bringing the device out of my pocket, so it's already set to go when I bring it in view. With the X, you'll have to bring the phone up to your face before you can even unlock it, and that unlocking process is not going to be as fast as current TouchID. So when the phone is in your pocket, or on your desk, basically any time the phone isn't already in front of your face (which is essentially 99% of cases), you have to waste extra time getting your face aligned to the screen. All they needed to do was put TouchID on the back.

Lazy and ugly design shouldn't cost consumers $1000+.

I'm not sure what any of that had to do with what I commented on dealing with video playback.

I expect the X will have at least 3GB RAM, as last year's 7 Plus did.

Perhaps, but thats still half what other flagship phones are offering for less money.

I never really like apples locked down ecosystem, but always gave them props for having better hardware, especially the CPU/GPU. Now it seems like prices are going even higher but the better hardware aspect is no longer true with them having 1/3-1/2 the RAM vs competition.

That's because Android is so slow and bloated it needs that and more to even attempt to function let alone function as fast and smooth as iOS with 1gb ram.

Oh, and I own a Samsuck galaxy S7. In real world use it's noticeably slower than a 6S and not even on the same planet compared to the 7plus. Now the 8 and X phones will be another order of magnitude faster than anything running on Android. Pretty soon Android phones will need 64gb of DDR3 just to do messages and browse the internet.

I am surprised that in this day and age, people on this forum especially, since it's a tech forum hardware related, don't realize that more != better in all circumstances.

Yeah. I'm using the 7 Plus with its 3GB of memory, and it has never felt limiting. In fact, I've been surprised at times with how many Safari tabs seem to remain in memory after I've opened numerous other apps. I wasn't terribly impressed with the 2GB of the previous phones, but 3GB seems fine.

There are 3 things you can never have enough of when it comes to computers, Clockspeed, RAM and Storage.

I've been an Android guy for a long time and I actually don't mind the look of the iPhone X.

I tried getting a pixel XL last year and even six months after it was released I could never find it in stock on Google's store.

If the same issue happens with pixel 2 that only leaves me thinking about the iPhone. Google has always had issues with stock.

I'm not on any contract so I always pay full price no matter what I end up with. But yea still 2gb of ram, and oh they bumped the avg storage to 64gb while I think the standard pixel XL 2 will have 128gb as default.

Will be interesting if this is the new NORMAL price for phones these days.

Will be interesting to see how new phones like pixel and mate 10 will be priced out. I'm really thinking google will be shocking everyone (price wise) when they roll out with the pixel2. I just have a gut feeling it will be affordable for the the masses. If not this cycle, then when they acquire HTC....

Anyway, yeah, I know an S8 can be had for about half the price. Might be really good news for samsung for people looking to switch to something new but aren't about to drop 1K for a phone.

I'm definitely ordering the watch as soon as its available.

I'm going to wait to see the teardown on the X and see if they are gimping the AT&T phones again with some 28nm taiwanese intel crap modem like they did with my 7

I hate AT&T so much....

Buy the unlocked version and activate it on the AT&T network, then you can avoid the crappy Intel modem

If you look at intel's modem offerings for 2017 the XMM7560 appears to be superior to the current Cat 12 20nm Qualcomm part used in the 7. It has CAT 16 download, MIMO, CAT 12 upload speeds and supposedly even has CDMA.

Infineon was a good modem company. They should be able to a good quality CAT 16 modem. But they also should've been able to compete with the Qualcomm part with their XMM7360. Instead, it appears they were forced to use a much older process (TSMC 28nm) and that greatly affected the amount of Db Gain on their baseband LTE modem to the point where often the XMM7360 could not get any reception at all in areas where the Qcom part could easily.

I suspect that now that Intel has successfully ported the XMM7560 to either their own 14nm+ process or TSMC's 16nm process they will be able to meet performance requirements and not "gimp" the devices they are used in. I don't know this for sure though. There really is no way to tell until devices can be tested.

This is really what bothers me about Apple's legal fervor: in defending itself it has made enemies of some of its best partners. Nvidia being one of these also. I don't know why Apple hasn't seen the advantages of integrated on-die baseband modems. For the last 3 years Samsung has vastly out-performed Apple consistently in this specific area: Baseband modem reception and bandwidth. At this point Apple barely competes with chinese SoCs on this aspect which is pathetic.

Most articles I've read about pixel 2 mentions it will be more expensive than the pixel was last year. A 128gb pixel XL came to around $900 with taxes and they only offered 32gb as the cheaper one.

The articles I've seen say pixel 2 will be around at least $50 more. So I think it will be up there to compete with the high end models. Only thing I worry about is the pixel 2 processor will be an 835 and that's not gonna be as good as the one in the iPhone X.

I'm waiting until I see what they reveal October 5th before buying. I've had this Nexus 6p over two years and I need to hand it down as I'm getting bored with it already but it's been an excellent phone.

From what I read, the X has 3gb of ram as does the 8 plus. The 8 has 2.
Yeah. It seems a lot of people don't realize the current 7 Plus has 3GB, so the 8 Plus and X will also. Of the upcoming phones, only the regular 8 non-plus is 2GB.

Whatever the "normal" price becomes for phones these days, once it's "normal" for Android, it will be okay.

But for now since it's Apple, the price is ludicrous.

Besides Samsung there are Android phones you could get for much cheaper of course, not similar build quality. But I think these prices will be the norm now. Google increased their process last year with the pixels so they can compete at the high end level and I don't see it going back down now. Apple has always had higher prices due to the brand, style, build quality, and control of both hardware and software.

If others want to compete they have to build and price theirs similar.

Not at all, this price point should not become normal unless we hit former USSR levels of inflation. Note 8 was the first offender and all of it's appeal was lost to me the moment the price was revealed. This goes beyond OS/OEM preference. If I can make a stand in a "nearly monopoly" GPU market, it's a lot easier to do so in the smartphone market with so many choices. This is ultimately the consumer's fault, lack of maturity on both sides of the fence, if it were a Android vs. Apple thing. That "gotta have it" mentality is beyond stupid.

I've decided to import a $500 phone, even with the added cost of importing and paying the early adopter fee, I've managed to minimize the added cost of importing, otherwise I would have waited until the added cost became reasonable. I'm fortunate to be able to afford the Note 8 or the iphone x but I was raised to have a backbone and resist the urge to buy the shiny toy, regardless of it's cost.

If you hate samsung so much why did you get an S7? Seems pretty idiotic, unless you are just some 10 year old going "wah wah wah".
