Perhaps it could be that people have varying opinions than you do and that the notch really isn't that big of a deal. Just a thought. To me there's just too many concessions and strange design choices for the X that make me feel it was a rushed product. And there are too many people forgiving that notch, we should all expect a lot more from a $1000+ phone from one of the richest companies in the world. Slim top and bottom bezels with TouchID on the back would have made a world of a difference, both in form and function. Any other company tries releasing a phone with a notch like that, they'd be the laughingstock of the tech world, and rightfully so. As someone who finds smartphones incredibly useful and cool gadgets, I like seeing companies really push the boundaries of what can be done, while also presenting a modern, sleek device. The X feels like a lazy, one off by Apple, which will be rectified in the next iteration.
I'll have to see one in person, but right now I'm wondering what happens to battery percentage reading? None of the screenshots show it, and it looks like it wouldn't even fit next to the notch. People don't want a vague battery icon, they want to know exactly what percentage of battery life is left. What about bluetooth, alarms, location/gps usage, LTE/3G status? Why are notifications pulled down from the left (furthest from your thumb) and control center from the right? Shouldn't that be swapped? I've seen some people talk about the right/left swipe as though it's a feature of the notch!
I personally don't care too much what phones "look" like. I care more about the physical form factor than anything. When I saw the mockups of the phone prior due to the rumors, I was like yeah this looks pretty weird and stupid. But after seeing it in motion, while I don't think it is the greatest looking design, it doesn't bother me at all. When using the phone with an app that makes the sides of it black it won't even really be visible. When watching a movie on the phone I'd probably have it in that aspect fit mode vs. the aspect fill mode since that is what I did on my current phones, I don't want to miss any of the picture anyways.
As for the battery indication, I have never ever had my phone set to display the numbers. I've always just had a battery icon up there, up until recently when my battery started crapping out on me. But that was because I'd see it shoot from full to really low and wanted to know wtf was going on. But other than that, I don't see why knowing an exact percentage really matters and it definitely doesn't to me. Whether I have 90% or 85% doesn't matter, I know it's enough battery. Same if I have 10% or 5%, either way I know I need to charge it soon. But again, this goes back to just people's opinions and uses differing.
My main concern is the TouchID not being in there. I realized today how when I check my phone in the car (not necessarily while driving) that I kind of just have it sitting to the side and I unlock it by putting my finger on the button. They claim that FaceID works from angles and stuff, but I wonder how that will actually work in reality.
Also how does the finger print stuff work on the back of phones that have cases on them?
