Congrats, Anand. Way to do it IMO!

Just love the ironing of it all. Anand starts PC enthusiast site only to move over to APPL.

lol @ all the selling out comments. i'm no apple fan but their products are decent enough that there's no shilling needed. as for taking whatever job apple is offering, that's just business.

Trying to summarize my detailed thoughts on this to the core aspects.

1) Happy: I am happy for Anand (and Brian Klug) that they have this wonderful new opportunity.

2) Sorrow: I will miss the insights of Anand and Brian on the Anandtech website and their wonderful podcast. They were unique and talented giving insight and education that I have yet to replicate from other news sources. Both in their wide range of knowledge but also that depth of that knowledge and the ability to communicate this knowledge to other people.

3) Hopeful: I hope to see/hear Anand and Brian in the future. Apple is usually a closed off company but often they do communicate during certain events and to the press. I hope due to the personal connections that Anand and Brian brought with the industry, as well as their talent at educating that we will see Apple allow these two people to do detailed guest interviews and/or guest sitd-owns such as podcasts. This may be unlikely to happen but I can not think of anyone who would be better at this then these two people (especially Anand though I love how entertaining Klug can be)

Apple hires Anand!

Apple Hires Longtime Technology Journalist Anand Lal Shimpi

After announcing his departure from AnandTech, veteran technology journalist Anand Lal Shimpi will join Apple in an undisclosed role, reports Re/code. A representative for Apple confirmed that Shimpi would be joining the company, but also declined to provide any further details.

Quite a turn of events considering started the site based around the P.C. winding up at Apple.

Life certainly is interesting.

Why would he retire from his own gig to go work for the man? In his shoes I'd definitely rather keep running the site than to work for another company unless the site was not bringing enough money? Most people use adblock these days so advertising revenue on websites is not what it used to be. You basically get ads from those nice enough to disable because they're loyal to the site, and those who just finished reinstalling their OS/programs and did not get around to installing adblock yet.

Either way there may be more to it than we know so I'm sure he has his reasons.

I don't ad-block on AT. Was tempted when I started getting ads popping up in the middle of the page but mods fixed it as I haven't had that in awhile.

I've got mixed feelings about the news too. At first blush seems like selling out. But at the same time he seems to be distancing himself from the reviews so as long as he doesn't try and influence his editors then I can't see a problem. He's going to be making fat stacks too. All we can hope is that he'll have a positive influence on that company and help them come out with some new revolutionary tech. Without Jobs, the best they could do was pretty colors bigger screens and a thumb print reader. We need some Oculus Rift level iPhones. I mean geez even the game boy is 3d these days.

Everyone posting nonsense like this has never worked in the valley and/or technology. Someone like Anand would not have to "angle" themselves into a job at Apple - give me a break. He could easily have gotten a job at Google, Facebook, Samsung, etc. Anand is at least as accomplished as many of the folks I know at these companies.

Wow - silicon valley - the epicenter of ginormous sellouts, I am *so* impressed. :rolleyes

Anybody who has worked on Wall Street or anywhere near DC (I have done both) knows what a captured regulator/sellout/revolving door looks like. I also did PC hardware reviews for several years before I got into my full-time jobs, so yeah, I know the temptation there too.

Edit: Whaddya know - a great example! Eric Cantor just joined Moelis. Opening a Washington office.

I'm going to sound like a total dick, but I'm kinda not liking how this all played down. Anand should have stated in his retirement letter he was 'retiring' to join Apple. I wish Anand the best but I really hoped he would move on without saying he's "retiring"; he's not, he's now working with a vendor he once reviewed products for.

P.S. Anand is getting paid way past 100k. The reason he took the job is simple: Apple has nowhere to go but up at the moment, it's practical experience in a very lucrative industry, and I'd bet it's a bit calming to know this entire site doesn't need to be micromanaged weekly. Anand can now focus work/energy on specific tasks while getting paid above 130k. I'm glad he's (most likely) getting paid more because he deserved it

No he could not have gotten a job at google, facebook, or samsung. Not at the rate Apple is paying him. None of those companies utilize his skills; maybe Samsung, but they wouldn't pay him nearly as much as Apple. Apple has so much cash right now that they are recruiting for EVERY position at breakneck speeds (you'd know this if you worked in the valley). I'd be working there too if I didn't like the feeling of being a small fish in a massive company.

Luckily it is Apple and not Intel. The later would have just "confirmed" the AMD conspiracy theorists (aka fanboys).

My observation is that in addition to a bias for Intel Anandtech has had a bias for Apple as well. Now I don't know if there has been any cash given for this or even if the bias was a ploy to curry favor with Apple but no matter the reason this site has not been impartial in regards to cpu and mobile wars.
