You'll need an adapter to use VGA on every graphics card and laptop sold today. That's the price you pay for using outdated technology.

The industry I work in, we buy $450 monitors where the newest models were just released late last year...guess what the only video input connector is?

right, it's the same unsubstantiated article

It's mainly whining about the default (SBC) codec

The only remotely relevant that thing in that entire article is this:

ok, so avsforum is down, but behold, the google cache

That's a problem with the physical headphones he was using, not BT itself.

More complaints about the quality of the devices rather than the protocol

You're seeing what you want to see. Even the quote you cited explains that the problem doesn't solely lie with the transport (meaning the transport is a problem) but ALSO with the headphones, and I agree with that. Bad transport AND bad headphones. So what is your point? NO ONE at Avsforum serious about audio quality would use BT as a wireless transport for their music on their MAIN system (high end audio setups). They will however use AirPlay which is a MUCH better wireless transport.

If he's dealing with bad headphones, how could he make any judgments about the codec?

All you've got are some random, vague forum quotes. If you want to make a convincing case, point to an actual A-B study or acoustic analysis.

Without that we're just playing he said/she said

Yeah, right on! Apple and their evil ways make me get an adapter for my external 56K modem! And guess what, I also have to get an adapter for a parallel port. How the hell am I going to plug in my almost new dot matrix printer?! Fvcking Apple! There is no other reason than, they just want to make more money.

Fvck you Apple!

Come on, quit trolling. Do you REALLY believe that Gigabit Ethernet on a laptop is obsolete just because Apple said so? I've never seen a wireless router (Even the snazzy new 802.11ac ones) that can transfer files half as fast as a hardwired connection.

And believe it or not, everyone that uses those Dell laptops, hates them.

I have one of them, and I like it. It's not thin or sexy looking, but it gets the job done.

I need to remember to be extra smug the next time one of the Marketing guys comes in and can't plug into one of our VGA projectors at work because he left his friggin Apple Thunderbolt dongle at home

For the vast majority of Apple's customers, yes, a gigabit ethernet port (or an ethernet port at all, really, is obsolete.

Would I have a shiny new MBPr without the USB 3 gigabit adapter? No. Would you? Probably not. Am I going to complain about a $30 adapter that I might need once a year? Nope.

But there are plenty of wireless routers that don't have gigabit ethernet.

I'm using a E6430 right now. It's all right. It's not great or anything. I'd drop it for a MBP given then opportunity.

We've got some 7440's in recently. They don't have VGA ports, they rely on MiniDP and adapters. But they're Ultrabooks and that's really what Apple is targeting these days anyways. They don't have a "professional" laptop.

Or you could be a hero and keep a couple of them handy.

What's funny is no matter how much Apple limits what you can do, people will still flock over as soon as a new version of something comes out.

I love the MBPs but Apple's decision to take out the ethernet port from the retina units really sucks big time. I get it that for a lot of people it's just a port they'll never need, but I really hate that they do that. I go wired whenever I can. It's just much more reliable to be physically plugged in, and I'm saying this even with me spending time all day long in buildings with extremely robust wireless infrastructure.

Because it's about them removing yet another feature (the standard audio jack). Now you'll need to use some proprietary connector/adapter. But no matter how much they take stuff away people still flock over to that brand.

Because, even with the removal of "standard features", the experience is largely the same, and is consistent with real life use. Apple has been first to add a new feature, and first to kill it completely from their line up. They were a big part of killing floppy disks, firewire, and even optical disk drives. And, guess what? The experience on them hasn't been degraded for the vast majority of people. Is it annoying when you're trying to install software and don't have an optical drive? I guess, if you still have software that comes on optical media.

Apple removing (which isn't even close to what the article says) the 3.5mm jack and allowing full sound over lightning is a transition they know most of their customers won't mind making. Let's look at how many people use the iBuds or whatever they are called? A large amount. Sure, there is a very niche market of people who buy high end headphones (60% of which consists of people who buy Beats...), but those people will either upgrade their headphones, buy an adapter, or live with it.

Going to make charging while listening hard for some folks. Sure, a stereo with Lightning for AUX in can charge while jacking audio, but your noise-canceling headphones will do exactly the opposite (run it dead), making me prefer Bluetooth headphones that I can use simultaneously while charging either and eschew the benefits of Lightning.

I don't see apple phasing out the 3.5 jack for a while at least, but I could see them limiting the bit rate the 3.5 jack will output to 1/2 quality. I still hate sony more. :/

I bet you guys are still up in arms that Apple stopped putting floppy drives and serial ports in their computers.

But what is an open alternative to the 3.5mm jack? I hate blu-Ray with a passion, and dislike things as far as x86. I don't believe that anything that is an industry standard should be privately owned. If there is a new, more popular connector with better quality show me it and I'll be happy.

I would not buy the iPhone 6 if they removed the 3.5mm jack.

Alternatives:
Bluetooth
Lightning to 3.5mm adapter (which could even be included with the device)

Bluetooth is ok but I don't trust bluetooth with my sound. It's spotty anyways and we know that apple hates it's guts. I'd be fine if apple included a lightning to 3.5mm adapter (With another lightning port for charging too) with the phone but we know they won't, or won't after an iteration or two.

Don't worry the great and holy, prophetic Saint Jobs set this event in action before his "demise" All is going as planned.

After all who needs a 3.5 mm jack if Apple decides you don't really need one?
