Engadget reporters really aren't all that techie... they're just reporters who understand technology slightly more than than your average journalist.

Something tells me that you wouldn't catch an Electrical Engineer outside of Apple using a new Macbook... The lack of Ethernet port for transferring their huge CAD files would probably drive them nuts, among other things.

...or they just own an Ethernet adapter.

Or they can use their 802.11ac, Thunderbolt, USB 3.0, or just get an ethernet adapter. But only nerds know about technologies like that.

We already talked about how much needing half a dozen dongles for an Apple product sucks about three pages ago. Try to keep up

So how many does an individual actually need? The engineer in your example probably won't need or want anything more than the Ethernet adapter.

Or nothing at all because sometimes freedom and flexibility are worth more than ninety seconds.

Heh... I'm apparently the only person here who has to burn DVD's, copy large files, and connect to VGA projectors at work. Oh, and I didn't even go into the huge list of specialized software I need at work that doesn't have a Mac version available.

That's why my Macbook stays at home and I use a Dell laptop at work. Carrying all of that extra crap with me would be a pain in the ass, and I'd still have to run Windows in a VM on top of that.

Of course, the amusing thing about all of this is that the spy photos of the iPhone 6 that have been leaked shows that it HAS a headphone jack. So this entire thread is just a giant Apple trollfest.

Easy and very true - for IT work, if working with a laptop as a tool in the field (I didn't, however - I used a bench-type setup with desktops), a classical business-style Windows laptop is a winner. Even the Ultrabooks are skimping on legacy ports and optical drives for space constraints. Older MacBooks could do a lot of the work though, I reckon - just go the Bootcamp or VM route for Windows software - a fair bit of the other work could still be accomplished under OS X.

If u don't do apple the change wont matter.
If you do I'm sure you will adapt.
I'd suspect this has something to do with apple spending all that loot to acquire beatz, beats, whatever.
One might knock the revised port but what if that revision conforms to apples new amazing out of this world soundng beatz earbuds?
How bout earbuds with multiple micro speakers for incredible audio experience?
And all those other lame outdated two stereo earbuds for your android become the joke?
As with God, never question apples wisdom.
Apples will be done on earth as in heaven.

I have semi expensive 3.5mm earbuds, these ones and the last 3 pairs I had all make a very audible consistent scratchy sound when I'm using them while running. it's from the cord rubbing against my clothing or skin. Annoying to say the least. I haven't ever used earbuds that didn't exibit this to at least some extent, even slightly is still pretty annoying. I for one welcome any technology that can remedy this, and this technology should do just that.

Huh? Lightning headphones would still have a cord, so that would still be a problem.

Didn't you say a long time ago that you already have Bluetooth headphones? (Beats or Bose or something)

Lightning is digital, so it wouldn't have that problem.

Since it looks like you and QueBert were serious:

The cord rubbing on your body isn't creating electrical impulses in the wire (not perceptible, anyway). It's creating actual vibrations that are carried through the cord and to your head.

[edit]
Seriously. Think about it: You even hear that sound when your headphones aren't plugged-in.

Why, the film and television industry still heavily uses Final Cut Pro for editing. Uncompressed HD video files are huge. Even for SD video, I was working with 30mbps DV back in college.

You just have to get the lightning to ethernet dongle, which is $29. The thing I hate about thunderbolt though is it's some sort of proprietary connector. So you can't just get a cheap one off Monoprice, which is BS. Though in fairness to Apple, generic USB 3.0 to ethernet adapters can be even more expensive.

Thunderbolt was made by Intel. Research the history of LightPeak. It was originally conceived as an optical connection.

If they did drop the 3.5mm, would you honestly be surprised? It's Apple. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ rules

If history has taught us anything. it's that consumers get more frustrated with these type of proprietary issues, anyone remember the Packard Bell computers of the early '90's?, hugely popular due to low cost but you couldn't add memory via the normal route as in every other X86, AT form-factor MB, you had to buy it on a special tiny board that plugged into a proprietary Packard Bell slot at close to double the price of upgrading any other PC. Now I'm not saying this is a very good comparison due to how large and successful Apple is vs Packard Bell's 5 year run of popularity but it was a clear indication consumers don't like being forced to pay extra $$ for your own quirky ideas. My guess is Apple isn't that dumb and leaves the standard jack in place for those who already own a high-quality set of headphones/earbuds that they have no intention of throwing out at Apple's whim.

They wouldn't need to throw them out. If Apple removes the jack on some future iteration of the iPhone, the adapter would probably be included. If not included, it would be affordable.

You could still use your fancy headphones, and new ones might have a swappable cord for direct lightning connection and host-powered active noise cancelation. Win.

It wouldn't be a problem, I can induce static noise in speakers with anything that hooks up with 1/4 or 1/8th inch jacks by moving the cable at the adapter end. I cannot do this with my SPDIF. This Apple connector will be digital so there will be no such static. And yeah I have Beats Bluetooth headphones, but I like IEM's better for jogging.

Of course you have to be listening to music to hear the static, that's why I know it's not simply because the cord's rubbing. None of my digital headphones do this.
