I'd have to assume the 10gb model is a referb since they haven't been making that one in a while since it was upgraded to the 15gb. 170$ for the 10gb ipod is great altho the 20 gb would be very tempting if i didn't already have my 10gb. The remote, carrying case and doc and double the size for 80$ more isn't bad at all.

No, you don't need the dock to use the ipod. The dock just acts as a nice place to put your ipod everynight, that will recharge it and update any songs on the ipod if you so choose.

bah, why can't Apple be consistant? notice that the 10 and 30GB have no "Refurbished" at the end. I called to ask whether that means those are new units, but the CSR could not give a straight answer. If I knew whether it was refurbed or not i'd go ahead and buy it, but the uncertainty annoys me.

I have read other people say in the past that Apple refurbs are basically the same as new.

I haven't had any issues with the battery on mine so I don't know what you're talking about. What are you basing your claim on, things you've heard from, say, iPod's Dirty Secret? Batteries aren't suppose to last forever you know. Besides, you can easily change them yourself as well for $30-$50.

No, it's not a fact. The majority of us with ipods get great battery life. If you were unlucky and got one that doesn't, it's warrantied for a year, and the battery problems tend to show up early than a year.

Yes the 10gb is gen 3. The title for the category is "Refurbished iPods (with Dock Connector)". Dock connector is only on gen 3 or now 4 units. Yes this is a gen 3 10gb.

gen 4 has a click wheel that is like the one found on the ipod mini. also has better battery life (12hrs) and is 1mm thinner.
