So my takeaways:
1. I was hoping for an iPad Mini Retina. I got an iPad Mini Retina. But I also got a 1-pound iPad Air. That is pretty phenomenal and definitely warrants some hands-on time before making a decision, especially since the Mini is now $400, making the full-sized (and very light) iPad only $100 more at $500.
2. I was hoping for a Macbook Air Retina. Instead, they released updated Macbook Pro Retina laptops. Thinner. Lighter. Cheaper.
On the hardware side, the new 13-inch version is more svelt than its predecessor, just .71 thick and weighing under 3 pounds, thinner and lighter. The 13-inch MBP will feature 2.4 GHz Core i5 (Haswell) processor with 4GB RAM and a 128GB SSD. Its existing Retina display capacity will be enhanced by an Intel Iris GPU. It ships today $1300, $200 less than last years..
Edit:
According to Apple, the new 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro is 3.46 pounds, which is 0.11 ounces lighter than the previous 13-inch model. The new 13-inch model is also 0.71 inches thin, which is 0.04 inches thinner than its predecessor.
The 13" Air is 0.11-0.68" thick (vs. 0.71) and 2.96 pounds (vs. 3.46). It costs $1100 starting (vs $1,300). So for $200 more, you can get a Retina screen and more power with only a little bump in physical size & weight. That is definitely worth considering. I'd still
rather have a Macbook Air Retina, but if the new one is hardly bigger & heavier and offers way more performance for $200 more, meh - I'd rather have the nicer screen, so I may pull the trigger on that.
Edit: OK not quite as lightweight - it's 2.96 pounds vs. 3.46 pounds. That extra half a pound definitely feels weightier in your hands!
