Just a question I was asked on IM.

if apple OS is switching to the x86 platform... can it be installed on a current PC as linux or windows?

if they are switching, when is the new x86-compatible OS set for release?

(newb questions, but i haven;t look into it at all)

I don't think there's been an official statement, but it's generally accepted that you will not be able to legally install osx on non-apple hardware. It's already been done to a degree illegally. It seems that windows and other x86 operating systems will install fairly easily on mac hardware, if you wanted to do that for some reason.

The performance seems to be good but naturally there are only development versions "available" yet and Apple is going to implement some protections so it won't run on non-Apple hardware (at least initially). It's illegal and Apple said they don't plan to release a non-Apple compatible version.

I don't think that is "allowed" here on Anandtech.

What ever happened to buying a mac mini, popping in more ram and playing Get-Happy.mp3?

Its stupid for apple to not want to make a non-mac version of it. Just think of how much money they would make from that! What are they thinking.

Because

Selling many copies of operating system = not much profit and giving up a huge amount of control

but

Selling a bunch of hardware and accessories at sky high prices = lots of profit.

The two are more or less mutually exclusive.

Exactly. And intel could afford to give them one heck of a deal.

Apparently OS X x86 10.4.2 can't be pirated in the same way as 10.4.1 was. It will probably be cracked though.

As an aside, I've been using development macintels at work, and OS X is really quick on them (more so than Windows on the equivalent hardware, or OS X on a recent Power Mac G5).

good to hear. I always loved mac but always loathe the "mac lag" which seems to occur in anything other than the highest end system. It sucks that mac it's mac isn;t making a generic version that can run on pc platforms. I agree, Apple would make a TON of money.

BTW, anyone notice you can use mac and apple interchangibly even though mac was just a series of PCs Apple came out with back in the day? Guess we are so used to both, it doens't matter.

How does Apple recoup the money they don't get from hardware sales when the Macintosh PCs stop selling and everyone just spends $130 on the OS?
