Check out www.macmall.com ...they have some GREAT deals. I bought mine from www.macconnection.com which also has decent deals. I think you get more from macmall, but you can get a free 512mb ram, or Airport Extreme card from mac connection. Oh...and I think they both offer overnight shipping for minimal price. I beilieve my overnight shipping rate was something like $30.

I work for Mac Mall.

PM me if you want to get hooked up.

man! I wish I waited a few months to buy my Powerbook!
...I was in LA last week, and visited PC mall/Mac mall. It's a nice place with really friendly people.

did you visit the Torrance store? or the Santa Monica store? Everyone is pretty cool, for the most part.

If you want to get another one, shoot, i'll give it to you a few points over cost!

I went to the Torrence store...I was in the Courtyard Marriott about 1/4 mile up the street.
...I don't really need another one, but my friend might be looking for one. Just out of curiosity...how much could I get one for? You can PM me.

If these prices have dropped online, for those of us in school you can get an education discount too, which is at least $100+. I was thinking of doing this for a G4 for some vid editing (I'm a film major). Education discount = awesome + price drop = even better

Hmmm, didn't you know gates bailed out apple about 4 years ago? I think he gave them 20-30 million just to keep them in business so he wouldn't look like a monopoly. Anyway. Just as bill bob stole every OS known to man. I mean Bill cloned CPM and couldn't wait to call it M$-DOS. Sigh, someone had to do it I suppose. Then he made enough money and came out with Win3.1 yeah the only OS they ever wrote and it SUCKED A$$ too! So, they had to do something. Hey! Let's copy the MAC for win95/98 Apple sued and won twice. But, sadly apple had to give in like all software companies. But wait what about NT and XP??? Yeah...! That's a fine OS... Sure it is. It runs nice and stable! too Stable if you ask me. Almost as stable as a Unix machine. NT is a clone of Unix with a windows skin. XP is NT-5 ... I am still thinking they created NT first very quietly. They tweaked some Unix OS Kernel and called it their own. After a few years when no one sued... They figured they made it so they cloned it out to XP and made another billion stealing yet again another OS. If you ask me I think he should have got what he deserved in court. But he cried his way out of that one? Someone felt sorry for him stealing others work and running every new company that might try to compete with them into the ground.

Oh well.. The adventures of MicroCrap.

Dude, you got it all wrong~
MS did "invest" in Apple(by buying Apple stock) for 150 big-ones, but it was more of a gesture that helped Apple. Afterall, they(Apple) had $1.2 Billion cash at the time... and $150 millions isn't really life-saving amount when you have 1.2 billion dollars in cash.
Quote from an analyst at the time(1997)

Davis also said that given the size of Microsoft, a $150 million commitment amounts to little more than good public relations. "Remember, they spent $450 million on WebTV. The investment still doesn't give Apple a coherent strategy for turning things around."

Yes, and your research shows. The Mac OS has been Unix based since 10.0 came out.

This is a very hot deal, and I just love Apple threads because it brings out all the intellectuals.

Yeah, there's NO free software from Apple. iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto, iDVD, Appleworks...those aren't free on your iBook. Actually since you got the iBook you also get a LOT more software than if you had gotten a powerbook or Tower.

Rumor is that the entire Apple line will move to the IBM 970 (Power 4) processor as early as next year. Perhaps Jobs is trying to push out some old inventory for the new stuff. Because the new 15" Powerbook is rumored to be 970 based, as well as new PowerMacs, which should be released fairly soon.

Shameless promotion of my FS/FT ibook thread

I dont think that is the case. I believe this move has been triggered by the new Centrino line of processors from Intel. With the Centrino wintel for the first time has something that is truly mobile and can give battery life to compete with apple. I've been following apple prices for almost a year now. They _never_ reduce the prices to get rid of their inventory. Also, they never increase the prices. I would expect the new powerbooks (whenever they get released) to cost about the same...

btw, this deal is making me consider returning my new dell 600m (the keyboard sucks among other things) and going in for a powerbook 12". Now only if it had a better screen resolution (I love the 600m's 1400x1050)...

i love my PB. I'm not sure about that comment on wear and tear not being a strong point. I can tell you that the Powerbook is more solid that Dell Insiprons, which i feel like i am going to break every time i touch it. The screen is firm yet doesnt bind.

That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Point is Bill didn't write anything he just modified the code a bit and marketed others work. But this is a PowerBook thread so... sorry that got off the beaten path. Good Deal if your into spending that kind of money.

ive been thinking about getting a powerbook to replace my rapidly aging x20 (the battery goes like 40 minutes now) but the one button touch pad thing kinda scares me. ; )

id probably sooner or later install linux (probably sooner than later) on that sucker, and the idea of trying to use X without 3 mouse buttons scares me

but that aside, where can i find more information on the 15" AL powerbooks that are supposed to be coming soon?

It's only "free". They charge a $40 install fee for the stick of RAM. Hardly free at all.

There is so much misconception about Macs here that I'm starting to think of this as a consumer forum and less of a computer one. A Unix with an OpenGL accelerated GUI that can run MS Office, iApps, Photoshop, UT2k3, and pull down OSS from FINK is signifigant and very cool (in nerd land). Not to mention all the professional creative and scientific applications.

hmm, have you used an ibook before? my ibook came with itunes and imovie, iphoto was and is still a free download.

idvd is not free because it's a dvd-burning program, appleworks is also not free (although it should be), it's an office suite bundle.

Just a heads up...High resolution+12.1" screen=squinting to see anything. I actually tried my friend's Dell 600m, and although it's a nice lappy, it's still a Dell. The product quality doesn't even compare. And you'll love the keyboard on the 12" Powerbook. It's very comparable to my old IBM T20 laptop which I consider to be the best.

Yeah. The one button took alot of getting used to, but now I use mine with a tiny little travel mouse I bought from Microcenter for like $10, and it's 3 buttons. It's pretty much compatible withy any USB device including mice. The three buttons pretty much work like on Windows, with the right click bringing up options. The batteries also last a loooong time on my 12" powerbook. I bought an extra battery, but I really don't think I need the spare. I flew to LA last week, and used it to watch a 2 hour DVD, and listen to over 2 hours of music, and still had some juice left. This is with the LCD dimmed somewhat (this LCD is really bright to start with, brither than any other LCD including my Dell Desktop) which was better since it was dark in the plane, and you can reduce the processing power if you're just going to be watching a DVD or listening to music. I've gotten about 6 hours this way.

Also...there's not much information available on any new products from Apple. They keep things VERY hush hush. I didn't know about the new iPods until about a week before they came out. I'm sure they'll release an office release date for the new 15", but it'll be about a month before it comes out, and even then..not too much info will be available until release. People are guessing that they may come with a 970 chip, but I can't really see that happening, unless it's not released until early, or mid next year. If it's released this year, it'll just be like the two current Aluminum Powerbooks but with a 15" monitor instead of the 12, and 17, and just be updated with an aluminum casing, an aluminum keyboard, Airport extreme, better speakers, and buit in Bluetooth.

Not to nitpick, but it's poor OS/App design that leads to squinting. The GUI-related sizes should depend on user's preferences, not the screen resolution.

I wish. I bought mine like 4 months ago, so this won't apply to me. It's for people who bought it within the past 10 business days.

...uhh..ok?!? My Powerbook came with iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto, etc... If you buy the one with Superdrive, you get iDVD.

hehe. You're probably right. My Display looks great though at 1028X768. Also...the Text "Decrease/Increase" function is awesome in Safari (Apple's beta web browser).

Load Mandrake 9.1 with KDE. You can do all sorts! Change the look, Icons...text size..you name it...plus Konquerer kicks ass.. (Father of Safari). Comes with Open Office to open your MS productivity documents (Excel, Word, etc....) and play some really cool 3D games available within the Linux world. I guess OS 10 (latest) isn't all that bad of an OS but still uses old BSD kernel. I personally like my powerbook with Mandrake on it. You have your OS 10 run on it as well via bootloader or emulator that switches Mandrake to OS 10... If you are really sick you can even boot Classic OS within Mandrake and it's very smooth.

I do love my slick looking Mac Lappy... Apple always get my thumbs up for their beautiful design.
