Apple just dropped their prices on the Powerbooks by $200-300. All the retailers also followed and dropped their prices as well...adding up to some great deals. You can get free memory, printers, cases, etc... when you buy from some of them. You can now get the 12" powerbook with a Superdrive (DVD Burner) for the same price that I bought my 12" with a Combodrive just a few months ago.

This is a HUGE drop. Along with the redesigned 15", this could be where a lot of people take the apple plunge.

Yeah, hasn't Mac OS been Linux-based since 8? Sounds like Apple's taking a step in the right direction. Were it not for the relative difficulty/impossibility to custom upgrade an apple system and the somewhat limited game compatibility I'd be all over them. Though a powerbook might be nice for me.

P.S. Where's the linkage?

I think they've been Unix based since 10, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

So now instead of costing an arm and a leg it now just costs an arm a foot, a shin, and a knee!

These notebooks are very susceptible to wear...

That's what's keeping me away. They're pretty, but not very functional.

BTW, does anyone have anything on this upcoming [redesigned 15"] powerbook?

I bought my 12" powerbook when it first came out about 4 months ago...and despite a few minor problems (it is afterall a "first issue") I love it. You can get Microsoft Office v.X for about $200, and it's better than Office for Windows, and 100% compatible. The 12" also comes with a 32mb Gefroce 4 mobile video card. Not great for games, but will run pretty much everything good on low resolution. I run MOH:AA on it just fine. Airport Extreme is also great as well. It's 54g wireless, and compatible with almost all wireless networks. If you've never tried OS X, I suggest you get to your local Apple store, or CompUSA and try it out. You'll be hooked. There are many things that you can't do on a mac, that you can on a PC, but then again...there are many things you can do on a mac, that you can't do on a PC. I highly suggest a program called Konfabulator. It's probably the best $25 I've ever spent.

...The build quality is also second to none. No one can touch Apple, and IBM quality when it comes to mobile computing. I've owned IBM, Dell, Compaq, and now this Apple, and it's like comparing "Apples" to Oranges!

Check out www.macmall.com ...they have some GREAT deals. I bought mine from www.macconnection.com which also has decent deals. I think you get more from macmall, but you can get a free 512mb ram, or Airport Extreme card from mac connection. Oh...and I think they both offer overnight shipping for minimal price. I beilieve my overnight shipping rate was something like $30.

I prefer strawberries and kiwis myself!
...If you're in school, there is a FANTASTIC deal.
http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/buy_a_bundle_terms.html

...buy:
Powerbook for $100 less than the normal price (with education discount, i.e. 12" combodrive for $1,499)
iPod for $30 less than the normal price (with education discount, i.e. 10gb for $269)
Cannon Printer for regular Price (i450 for $99.99, or i850 for $149.99)

Get $300 back. ($200 for the iPod, and $100 for the printer)

So you can get a 12" Powerbook, a 10gb iPod (a new 3rd generation one), and a Cannon i450 printer for a total of $1568. Now this is a HOT price. To put it into perspective, I bought my 12" powerbook, and 10gb iPod for about $2100, and I didn't get a printer. I would add a i850 for only $50 more, since this is an awesome printer.
