This is still a fine tablet and it would function well as media player but in that role folks would want to shuffle in SD cards containing movies as a mobile DVD player function..
Jailbroken + iFile + "camera connection kit" (or probably the <$5 chinese knockoffs) will let you play movies from SD cards.
A $199 used iPad1 16GB WiFi from cowboom will likely do just as well for movies though.

What SOC did the 1st generation come with??

Sure, for "real" iOS use, I would get an iPad2 or iPad3 to get the dual-core CPU and more RAM, though it's pretty tough to pass up an iPad1 for <$200 IMO. Then again for "real" iOS use, I wouldn't get less than 64GB either.... and of course the cellular data option if only to get the GPS function with that.... which puts you d@mn near $1K into one. Thus I snagged the iPad1 3G+WiFi 16GB when cowboom had those at $199 or $189 or whatever the deal-of-the-day was a month or so back. Darn nice little box at $200 though!

Meh, I'd say it's "OK" for $199 but with the blazing speed SOC's are being developed at that A4 will be a fossil in 5 months, it's the nature of the beast so they say. The $137 I spent for the Novo 7 advanced and it's A10/MALI-400 gpu I bought last October can now buy a dual-core SOC that will kick mine's ass..
How much is the difference between 16G iPad and 32G iPad?No SD slot on these??
