Wow. Dang. As of 2013, the world population was 7.125 billion. That's just about an iPhone for one in every 7 people

Did you know more than a third of the earth lives on less than $2 a day? That means that they could save for a whole year, buy an iPhone and not have enough money left over to use it. Meanwhile, one of my friends has had every iteration of the iPhone, and probably multiple with replacements.

why hold on to them? I've given all 2 of my old iphones to my relatives. Yes, its an old phone, but its a lot better than the old flip phones they were still using.

It is important to have perspective and remember that many people on the planet would be thankful to have any smartphone, let alone a high-end device.

That doesn't mean you should sell all your gear and live like someone in rural India. However, do be appreciative of your tech and know that someone else could use it when you aren't. If you can, sell or give away your iPhone when you're done with it. You may be nostalgic for your 2-year-old phone, but it might make a big difference for someone who otherwise couldn't afford a decent device.

Google said there were 1.4 billion active Android phones as of September 2015, so it no doubt hit that milestone a while back. Not that it's at all surprising, since there's a plurality of Android makers that cater to a wider range of people.

The bigger deal is that Apple has managed to sell so many iPhones despite catering primarily to the high end, and while resisting the urge to play the spec race (i.e. the biggest screens, the most CPU cores). Guess that's what happens when you refuse to dilute your brand, even if it means leaving entire demographics to your competitors.

Yeah I have an iphone 4s, galaxy s4, and some blackberry collecting dust for this reason. Work doesn't want them but ethically it doesn't feel right to sell them. So they collect dust.
